EA Buys Pop Cap

Old news?

Meh. They had one great game, but have been too busy milking their other casual games to do anything awesome with it.

I know it's the cool thing to spin every EA story into something far bigger than it is, but no great loss imo.

Can't say I was ever a big fan of them in a first place, they don't really make games that I like. I can see why EA are interested though, the sort of "social" games that they produce are a gold mine at the moment.

It's when serious game companies are swallowed up by casual game factories that we should get worried, a la Ritual way back when Half Life 2 Ep1 trounced SiN Ep1.

Depends how EA handle it really. If they push them to release things early then its gonna go downhill fast. If they leave them to there own devices and simply take the profit then there isn't a lot of difference.

EA have only one mode of operation. They are a giant factory which exists to mass-produce titles as quickly as possible - and the quality of their games is a distant second in terms of company priorities.

Everyone's acting like this is a death sentence, but when have EA been running devs into the ground recently? I can only think of Mythic, but that was one massive screw up that lies on Mythic's shoulders more than anyone else's.

Westwood + Bioware. They also stole the rights to SMAC from Firaxis Studio, hence we wont ever get a sequel to many peoples favorite strategy game ever made.

Westwood was a long time ago, and Bioware is doing just fine. Bioware under EA have produced two fantastic brand new IPs in 5 years, and 4 out of 5 of their main releases have been extremely good.

SMAC 2 wouldn't be the same without Brian Reynolds imo. Why Brian, why did you go to zynga of all places? :(
