EA have been holding back ps3 features

How come things like this work on the 360
Without being a fanboy... Microsoft did a much better job with their interface. Chat was there from the start (afaik) and was designed to be an integral part of Xbox Live, it works mostly of games.

How come things like this work on the 360, is it just EA not playing ball with Sony?

'cos that's just not cricket :(

The frameworks were built in to 360 dev kits etc from day one. On PS3 they weren't. In practice I doubt it is possible to retrofit in all the 360 features now, without some games not playing ball.

In a simple way imagine every 360 game from day 1 has always left 30Mb RAM reserved for xbox live stuff (i.e. dashboard in background, in game music etc). PS3 did not have this. There is more to it than RAM, but in it's simplest form, I think this is the underlying issue.

So in a nutshell EA don't want cross-game voice chat because it would bork some of their games?

Yes, but it's Sony's fault.

I wouldn't really care if it was just implemented into new games like trophies were, they didn't really seem to care about those. Suppose there is much less integration issues etc.

Yeah. I can't see the problem myself, most EA games that sell massively are yearly refreshes. Maybe one of their "current "'10" games is broken. I can't think they would care too much if Madden and Fifa 08 were broken (or 09 with 10 about to come out) as most people just buy the newest version every year.

Thing is trophies let you do stuff individually per game. Cross game chat would be useless if it did not work in all games and would confuse people, same as in game XMB being useless if it did not work in all games.

Trophies were always gonna require devs to add them as they are not a feature, but more content (i.e. the devs have to decide which trophies do what etc).

It's very believable this, too.

Think about how much EA has out there. They would have to patch every game they have out for the PS3. And when they won't sort out some big problems with FIFA09 because FIFA10 is close, do you really think they will do this?

From the post they wouldn't have to patch. It just wouldn't work in the game.

Making their game sub-par I guess.

At the end of the day this is Sonys fault, if they had planned these features from the start then this wouldn't be happening. If the games didn't meet the development standards Sony demanded the wouldn't have been approved and released. These features have been added as an afterthought and because of this it is unsurprising that they don't work with all the games.

after reading this i'm gonna give the e.a rep who comes into our store some grief !!!

Why though? EA designed their games to the specifications stated by Sony, it's Sonys fault that these specifications have changed thus breaking some of EAs games. Would you allow Sony to do it? Think about it, EA have invested millions in the development of these titles and they would effectively be rendered useless if cross game chat was implemented. Either that or Sony would have to block cross game chat to people playing those games, confusing customers and reducing the appeal of the title to potential buyers, again degrading an EA title.

It totally screws over EA either way, and all they've done is design games to the specifications given by Sony.

Its not breaking the games though, they just won't have the functionality.

As stated above it's then confusing the consumer as some games will support it, some won't. He even said in the original thread that there wouldn't be any point in implementing it if it wasn't supported across the board. If they did indeed block it in these trouble games then it would reduce the appeal of those games, thus hurting EA for doing nothing wrong.

Supposedly when in-game XMB was added to FW 2.4 it broke a few rare games? Anyone know anything about this? One is meant to be an EA game and so the cause of all this it seems...

Soz perhaps broke was the wrong word - I think it just didnt function (the in-game XMB) which is why EA are ment to be opposed to adding these new features retrospectively...
