I'm about to blow my cool this is absolutely ridiculous.

So I decided today that I wanted to take out my G27 and play a bit of Shift 2 for a quick blast from the past.

So I download it off steam, setup my G27 and as I click play a window appears saying all my authentications have been used up ?!

Not the end of the world I thought, I'm sure there must be an easy de-authorization process. After looking through the help pages I find that I need to go to the windows games section, right click on Shift 2 and click de-authorize.

Of course though, I don't have a shift 2 icon in my windows game section so I can't do this as I just reformatted my computer recently.

So now I'm stuck in a 60min + queue waiting to talk with an EA advisor who can hopefully sort this out.

What should have literally taken 5 minutes max to do, has now resulted in an hour plus long process.

Yet another fail for EA and their s&"£! DRM. My biggest question is, why can't Shift 2 automatically de-authorize a computer upon uninstall? Would save all this hassle.

The sad thing is, I can probably pirate a copy of Shift 2 quicker than it's going to take for this adviser to sort this mess out. Next time this happen I will just pirate because frankly EA doesn't deserve the money we pay when we have to deal with headaches like this.

Anyway bit of a random rant, but seems to apply to everyone's impressions of EA recently, even though Shift 2 is getting to be an "old" game now.

Update:

And after all that waiting and explaining the situation to the advisor.

"Thank you for waiting, you may need to contact a specialized team of EA to further assist you with your request. Please call them at 0870 243 2435. They are available Monday through Saturday 9AM-9PM EST."

/facepalm

Thanks EA.

i now have a checklist of games that I make sure I deauthorise before a clean install. Funnily enough, they're mostly EA. Funnily enough, I've had to buy multiple copies of them because I forget :( Mass Effect, Spore, Shift 2....

on another note, I saw a G27 second hand in my local indipendent games shop for £79.99. Is this a good deal? I'd imagine I'd get a fair bit of use from it, for Pcars, GT legends, and shift 2.

Just tried that, but since my copy runs through steam doesn't seem to work unfortunately :(

Seems like a good deal, I paid a lot more for mine. Just check all the motors of the wheel are still working and not worn out. Same with pedals/gearbox

You sure? I have shift 2 on steam as well. Hold on, will test for you mate.

Huh, not as easy as I thought, can only find a crack exe for shift 1. Sorry mate.

DRM strikes again. So, if you uninstall via steam. Aka just delete local content, is that me not telling EA I have uninstalled it?

Apparently not?

I remember I have always uninstalled my Shift 2 through the windows "Programs and Features", so I would have assumed that was enough?

would have been nice if EA had gave a warning when entering in your CD keys, how to de-authorize them. I honestly don't mind doing it myself, especially if it means saving all this headache.

Is this also required if you copy a steam directory to a new hard drive?
Will it use up another authorisation on a first run?

There's an EA Deathorization tool here:
http://activate.ea.com/deauthorize/

Though they dont tell you about this before you uninstall, or reformat your PC, or whatever.

Note that not all eA games are on there; some games have their own individual deauthorization tool you need to find and download.

It's a mess. Games that require separate software to control whether you are able to install them deserve to be pirated.

Given that most EA games are only on Origin now, I would hope that EA build a tool in to Origin that allows you to right click on the game and de-authorise all uses... much like Apple does with iTunes content and playback devices.

Yeah, buy the same game multiple times from them! That'll show them! >_>

I'm baffled that people are willing to put up with so much.

I don't normally condone piracy, however for DRM crippled games like this I'd have to say they deserve to be pirated.

Doesn't matter how good a game is these days if it has DRM I look into what it is before I buy, I've saved a fortune doing this too. Some companies like direct2drive have DRM but will fix it in a jiffy if you have a problem. It's not always down to the DRM but the company, which is why I tend not to buy from EA anymore.

Shame as I really fancied ME3 and the new Sim City.

I never buy EA games unless it's for online play, they are just a bunch of money grabbing b*stards that make games for the masses, no thought gets put into making something different.
