"EA wants fewer, but better, games for 2010".......Yeah right.

One of EA's top European bosses has said that the publisher plans to release less games this year, but make sure that each one is the best it can be.

Speaking in an interview with MCV, Jens Uwe Intat, came right out and said it, "Our aim is to do less games and do them better. I think in the past maybe people have rushed into too many projects at the same time and have probably been spoiled by the overall industry growth, because it meant that if you didn't have proper portfolio management, the punishment wasn't particularly harsh.

"But in a more mature market (and I don't just mean older, I mean more professional), portfolio management becomes more important and it's something we're working on. And that's across the whole organisation, not just development. You also have to focus your publishing resources - both people and money. You can achieve much more if you leverage fewer, bigger franchises."

Really ???? Are they having a laugh. So, that means we wont see Fifa 10.5 World Cup etc etc.

Discuss.........

EA have been responsible for some of the most recent, promising new IPs (Dead Space and Mirrors Edge for example) and are they are also responsible for some of the most recent big, truely PC exclusive titles (Crysis, Warhead, The Sims 3, ok that's not our sort of game but it's huge, Spore, which wasn't great but was still a massive release and an attempt at trying something new). They've been far more original and given more attention to the PC than most other big developers in recent years.

So essentially what i'm saying is, EA are a better developer than most others of comparable size, so why are you shocked by this news? Sure they rely on the cash-in titles to get the real revenue, but at least they set aside some of this to make more interesting games which is better than most others. This move just seems like they've taken another step away from the cash-ins.

Sounds good to me.
EA aren't that bad IMO, sure there are updates to the likes of FIFA every year but I am pretty sure a lot of football fans would be annoyed if they didn't release a new one or a way to patch the teams for any updates every season

Off topic, maybe, but Mirrors Edge was my game of the year for 2009.

I truely hope a sequel comes out yet they dont dumb it down in any way.

Im not necessarily shocked by the news. What i mean by it is using the same game such as Fifa and releasing say a World cup or Euro edition. Churning out essentially the same game twice a year with a few extra bells and whistles.

I do agree with some of your earlier comments such as Crysis etc. Do EA produce games as good as say Ubisoft have over the years ?

I know what you mean but the general consensus is that a lot of people are a bit hacked off with what they do. I suppose we could say that about most of the companies.

A game like Fifa annoys me because the only patch that will be released for it will be for transfers and not the 200 things that need fixing. Then they will release the world cup edition (at bloody £40) and fix the issues within the game.

They have however made some good games recently. We will see how 2010 goes...

EA are a lot better than they were to PC gamers and just in general than 3 to 4 years ago. There are certainly worse developers/publishers around.

Yeah true.

I suppose my gripe is what they are saying now[ is exactly what they have been doing. Im very interested to see what 2010 brings from them.

Mind you my PC is getting that old i probably wont be able to play anything anyway :D

EA seem great as a publisher, EADM has been spot on for me, could be better as I know a few people who've had problems. Still wouldn't trust them as a developer though, heard quite a few horror stories about working hours, deadlines and stress.

BioWare seem completely unchanged since they were bought, if not better Mass Effect & Dragon Age are simply brilliant, so I'm happy.

Activision on the other hand...

I am very happy to here EA say this as I do feel they were on the right track last year.

I know Mirrors Edge and Dead Space didn't shift as many units as expected, but they were different and actually good.

However EA are traditionly the Simon Cowells of the games industry and in the past have done nothing but bad for the games industry
C&C being the shining example, but there are plenty of other nasty things they have done such as hostile take overs, lack of quality support and not listening to community.

I would like the company to change direction for the better and shall keep my eyes open, but I will not be ready to sit on the fence until I see them exercising a little more innovation and see how it gets them.

So, whats the chances they will stop developing the embarrassing, the prehistoric, the insulting and obscure Fifa pc version.

Hmmmm$$$$$$

EA have just been great lately, the Skate series is superb, Mirror's Edge was one of my favourite games of recent years and the last few FIFA's (on console at least) have been superb.

I agree EA have been spot on lately: Fifa, Skate, Mirror's Edge and Dead Space are some good titles. Not to mention they publish some great games too like Dragon Age, Mass Effect etc.

They have taken over as the most useless Dev.

E.A had a good 2009 in my opinion.

Ha I recall an EA exec saying his loves how Activision has taken their "evil empire" stigma.

I think EA are better then people give them credit. As people have said they do try but often don't succeed, eg Mirror's Edge, Dead Space, Spore, Crysis and WAR

abit off topic did anyone take hours and hours searching every planet on mass effect :)

the only games i didnt like from EA was crysis (which i trought was over hyped and not that great) and mirrors edge because no matter what i did i could'nt get to work on my computer.

EA have been good recently, It's as big a turn around as a corporate entity of that size could make really, investing in new IP and som slightly leftfield games. As above though Activision have fallen from grace with Bobby kotick at the helm I'm convinced that man has no soul.
