Earliest recollection stood at an arcade game and first game(s) played

im sure the first arcade game i played was Wonder Boy :D i also remember playing Outrun, i wasn't sure which i played first but it was probably wonder boy.

Space invaders then Asteroids.
Asteroids was my first game though i loved it, 10p a go and you was on as long as you liked with loads of lives built up. You'd get fed up in the end and pass them on to the next kid.
Galaxian was a big game for me when that came out as well.

I swapped a BMX for a table top Galaxian, it weighed a ton (sort of) the glass top was nearly 3/4 of an inch thick. Gave me many hours of pleasure in my early youth before i discovered the fairer sex.

so, over the years i've played far too many arcade games to list them all, but as the OP asked for early stuff, some other early units i loved included

galaxian - loved this game because i was so much better at it than i was at space invaders, and it was in colour, possibly the first colour game i played.
phoenix - loved that game, having to shoot holes through the mothership, can still vividly remember the tune.
moon cresta - can remember the imense pleasure i felt first time i managed to dock all three parts of the ship together for a super firepower machine, only to be devastated ten seconds later when i crashed it into a green squiggler.
scramble - i remember this game as being the first arcade game i ever played on a table top machine (in a pub called the Navigation i think, which in those days was a place people drove out to for a few pints with the kids on a sunny sunday)
boot hill - i remember this as the first simultaneous 2 player game i ever played. very basic graphics and gameplay, not much more advanced than pong to be fair.

more if i remember them.

oh, and this thread has reminded me that i must one day get around to finishing my mame cab :)

There was an old Pacman box somewhere when I was really really small and that was the first arcade machine I remember seeing, but as a kid it was Outrun and Chase HQ that I remember the most. Also remember Hard Drivin' and bought that as soon as it came out on the Atari Lynx. One of the first true 3D style driving games but waaaaaaay to hard :p

There was also a 3D hologram machine down at Hastings one year, like a Wild West shoot 'em up, it blew me away but I have no idea what it was called.

Then there were the Streetfighter wars, used to watch my mates shovel loads of money into that.

excellent posts

'keep em coming'

I remember "GAUNTLET", first 4 player game i saw. That machine must have made a mint, it was always packed.

Top game. :)

Gauntlet!!!! 4 player mayhem, that was probably my first. I think Double Dragon was probably the one I played most though....aahh the memories.
What was that game, fps type thing, the cabinet had a pair of guns mounted on the front ....

The first videogame I stood at in a pub was at a heavy rock disco we called The Highwayman sometime in the late 70's.
The game was abviously Pong.

PONG started it all.

We salute you Pong ;)

First one was Space Invaders. Then got hooked on Galaxian and 1942. Also loved Track and Field but gave me dodgy looking blisters on my right hand :o

Turbo, by Sega. This was back in the scarily early 80's. Only played it once at a local carnival, and for some reason I always remember the in game ambulance. :D (The board game spin off was pretty cool too!)

Most vivid early memory though has to be Outrun. No idea what was going on, but man, was it cool or what!?

Biggest arcade hero moment (and possibly my last arcade memory)? Well that while playing 'Hard Drivin' and having half a dozen or so people watching. My glory was short lived because while jumping over the big bridge I crashed in to a lorry coming the other way! Cue lots of oohs, and ouches while the action replay showed my moment of mad skill. :o

Wow, where do I start!

  • Golden Axe - Loved playing this.
  • Operation Wolf - Enjoyed using the plastic guns
  • Street Fighter - Had to be my favourite :)
  • Afterburner - Loved sitting in the funky seat in later versions.
  • Outrun
  • Ridge Racer

EDIT:Found this link trying to lookup Afterburner.... Arcade History

for years they tried to say Video games affected the behaviour of those that play them.
rubbish, i played Pacman for years and if the above were true then the arcade game generation would've ended up diving around in the dark to a background of manicly random electronic music while chomping away on pills.

:p

Final Fight

Street Fighter II: Turbo with the cheat "up, down, left, right, A Start" to activate Turbo mode!

It was the first Arcade game I played, but not the first ever game I played. The first ever game I played was Super Mario All Stars on the SNES when I was ickle and tiny :p
