I really want to run Final Cut Pro but that will require me upgrading to Yosemite from Mavericks. Does anyone know if the OS will make the laptop run slower? I have an Early 2011 Macbook Pro.

I can't say with any any real authority but I doubt the upgrade will introduce any noticeable slowness. I've got a 2012 Air which runs Yosemite quite happily. Can you actually upgrade to just Mavericks?

I currently have Mavericks but Final Cut Pro requires Yosemite (minimum I believe).

I have an early 2011 and run Yosemite just fine, have done since it came out. For what it's worth I have 8gb RAM and an SSD as the main OS drive.

If it doesn't already have an SSD, get one in.

My 2011 iMacs are running El Capitan very successfully.

I recently installed an SSD and upgraded it to 8GB ram. Good to know you guys still run it fine with the more recent OS's.

Do the SSD really speed a machine up.. I've a iMac 2010 version 2.8 ghz with 8gb ram. Thinking of getting a SSD into it than buying a new Machine

I recently replaced my hardrive on my early 2011 MBP to an SSD and it was like night and day. Photoshop used to take around 60 seconds to load and now it's opens within seconds.

For what it's worth I've just fixed a mate's late 2008(!) Macbook with El Capitan an SSD, and 2Gb RAM.

It's not that different in performance to my 12" Macbook to be fair.

I recently picked up a mid 2010 Mac Book pro used for reasonable money and it came with El Capitan pre installed and for a Core 2 Duo chip it does move along quite nicely. Planning on dropping in an SSD and 8 gig of RAM - new to Apple Macs, so far enjoying the experience.
