Earthquake in Japan....9.0...ouch!

Lucky I left Tokyo yesterday morning, good timing ! Need to go back on Tuesday though, hope flight isn't delayed.

Won't ever understand comments like this. How many people will have lost their lives here, you're worried about a flight? Oh and you don't need to go back on tuesday either, unless you actually live in japan.

Christchurch was 7.1 which is 670 kilotons, this one was a 8.9 which is 336 megatons so it's 501 times more energy than the Christchurch quake.

But energy alone doesn't determine damage, location and depth are also factors I think.

Info taken from Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richter_magnitude_scale

Are you sure that's correct ???
BBC still stating that it's 8000 times more powerful !!!!

from the wiki link posted
a difference in magnitude of 2.0 is equivalent to a factor of 1000 ( = (102.0)(3 / 2) ) in the energy released
seeing as it's 1.8 I imagine the BBC are just rounding it.

edit: oh, read yours as 1000, that's the only figure I've heard on BBC

Video from ~15 minutes ago show entire residential areas on fire :(

Yeah, its so hard to tell from nighttime shots from that angle and without much info, I can't tell if those are tiny little fires spread across say half a mile or like houses on fire, loads of them, across 4-5 miles, I get the feeling its more like the latter.
