Earthquake in Japan....9.0...ouch!

I wouldn't want to be in a chopper flying over an exposed reactor, remember the video from chernobyl?

Was some truly brave (or stupid, but i prefer to think the former) people giving their lives taht day to stop what happened from being even worse.

Watched quite a few videos on chernobyl a while back and one scene was particularly surprising, men in going out on to the roof with shuvels to chuck stuff into the open reacter to clear the radioactive material from the roof. Scientists knowing full well that being that close for even a second was going to give them a fatal dose...whether the soldiers knew this though i don't know.

Current casualties being reported as 1,834 people have been confirmed dead and more than 15,000 are still missing. (NHK).

Flew into a cable.........

Bah, didn't know that as the video description didn't give details and the youtube comments were, as usual, full of trolls.

It just looked like it crumbled out of the sky!

Still, not somewhere you'd want to fly over in a chopper at any cost.

Sounds like, quite stupidly, the reason the water levels dropped in I believe the no 2 reactor(wasn't quite clear) was because the pump ran out of fuel.

Though thats I guess a problem the country is running out of fuel seemingly and some things desparately need it. However the situation is fairly borderline because it would seem quite quickly after stopping pumping water in, its turning to gas too quickly and the water level is dropping below the rods(partially). Are they still venting gas, because the only real way to remove heat is pump in cold water, while venting the hotter gas.

Jesus, still listening, their readings suggest that most of the 4 metre long fuel rods were exposed for a while before they got the water pumped back in.

Considering they are now seemingly pumping water continuously into 3 reactors and fuel has been an issue. Somehow it feels a bit more like getting out of control just because cooling the 3 reactors is just becoming logistically harder over time.

With this kinda scale its usually simpler to relocate, bulldoze, start again.

Haave you seen the amount of crap they'd have to move?

Large boats on top of building.... Thousands of useless cars...... The thought of clearly all that up is just depressing to say the least!

it'll have to be moved anyway.
It does give them an opportunity to build new cities from scratch though.
