Problem is I could sit down and write the lyrics down but when on stage I've got that much going through my head that I need that security blanket.
I've got to a gig and had to travel 20 miles home & back to get my lyrics because I know I'd bugger it up.
If I'm watching somebody else singing then I know the lyrics and the one thing I really hate are singers who think they know the words but just make them up.
Sometimes if I mess up I just grunt and I actually get away with it.
I went to watch an ACDC tribute not long back and the singer grunted all the way through the set, I'm serious, you could not make out one word he was saying.
I'm generally good at learning lyrics but there were two songs that just wouldn't go in. These were "Promised Land" and "Gentle On My Mind". The problem with these is there are no choruses.
When the writing method was explained to me they went in and stayed in.
