I've been struggling to network my PC, running Windows 7 Beta, and my netbook, running Windows XP Home!!!

I have a Linksys WAG160N wireless router and both machines connect to that flawlessly - but refuse outright to see each other!!

Anyway, I've given up trying to get it to work so I hit upon the idea of a simple crossover ethernet cable!?!?
Am I right in thinking that I will just be able to plug one end into each machine and hey presto - mini network!?!?

Thanks peeps.....

it's easier over a router

share a folder on both machines

from one machine..

start, run
\\othermachinename

as bledd as rightly said mapping to each PC via the router is much easier.

just to add, instead of sharing a folder on each machine type '\\machinename or IP address\c$' in the run box.

The c$ will open the C:\ on the machine you specify. If you have other drive on the machine you can change the C to whatever dive letter you like.

Hope it helps.

Thanks for the replies guys - I'd about given up on networking these machines but I've never tried what you have both suggested!!

I'll give it a go tonight - is there anything else (even basic stuff) I need to do first?? (I'm thinking firewalls, router ports etc)

Thanks...

If windows Firewall is on make sure there is an exception entry for File and Printer Sharing.

You will also need to authenticate against the machine you are connecting to with a valid username and password if the systems do not share identicle credentials.

Sorry but I have no idea what that means!?!?

Is there any way I can do this without needing passowrds etc??

Thanks...

Do you login to your computers or do they just turn on and go straight to desktop?

What are you trying to do, just share files?

If so FTP is miles better than Windows File and Print sharing in my opinion.

surely msn will slow the transfer speed which will be more noticeable with big files.

make sure both pcs are on the same workgroup as well.

Its basically for transferring files from my PC to netbook - nothing too spectacular!!!!

I've tried time and again to set up workgorups etc but since one o/s is Windows 7 and the other Win XP, I'm having all sorts of problems as "homegroups" or whatever the hell they are, are exclusive to Windows 7 (or so I've read)

My PC just boots up into the default user account (dont know if that matters)

All I want to do is drag & drop or copy & paste files - if someone can walk me through it step by step I'd appreciate it!!

Cheers,

can the 2 pcs see each other on the network? can they ping each other?

make sure the xp machine is up to date with all its windows updates as im sure vista machines couldnt see an xp machine due to the lower level of security. there was a patch released that fixed this. not sure if this is an issue with w7.

I cant get the 2 machines to see each other over the wireless network at all!!!! - Both machines are fully up to date with updates etc and still nothing!!!!

I'm 99% sure its a Windows 7 problem as I recently had a lan weekend with a few mates and via a wired connection I could see the other machines but I couldnt share any of my files other than the default shared ones!!!!

open up a command prompt on both machines, type ipconfig /all

find out each computers ip addresses and then type:

ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

on each machine replacing the x's with each computers ip. If you manage to ping each other then they are connected and then you know your problem is something in the windows setup.

Thanks for the feedback guys......

I persevered and finally got it working last night...........and then it stopped again for no reason!!
