Hi Guys,

I need to share internet from my laptop (Vista Ultimate) (via a 3G card) to my desktop (W7 Ultimate). I tried using a normal Ethernet cable and enabling the Ethernet adaptor on the laptop to share internet but this did not work. I was unable to view the other network. Is the only way to do this via a crossover cable? Could I use a router?

The reason why I am trying to do this is I am waiting for BT to activate my phone which will be several weeks :(

Any help would be much appreciated :)

use crossover cable if you are NOT using a switch otherwise use a standard network cable with a switch and some sort of IP addressing scheme (using a router will handle the DHCP IP addressing)

Thanks Dazza. I assigned both computers an ip address manually and could ping each computer. I could not however browse the internet on the second computer even though I have shared the Vodaphone connection adaptor. At first I was thinking this was something to do with the corporate firewall on the laptop however I could already ping the laptop from my desktop computer.

No, assumed that this would be automatic as it is a Vista Laptop (Source) talking to a Windows 7 desktop. If this is not correct do you know any good guides for sorting this out using a crossover cable?

Please explain?

Would the fact that my laptop is on a corporate domain mean that what I am trying to do is not possible?

If the laptops are new you won't need a crossover as they auto-detect these days.

Sound's like you are trying to subvert the security on your company network to me otherwise you would have just plugged it in to the LAN, if I'm wrong then why don't you just plug it straight n to the LAN?

Sorry Spoon, should have explained the use case. I am trying to use my Company laptop at home because I am waiting for my telephone line to be activated.

So just to reiterate the steps:

C1 = Laptop with Voafone Internet Connection
C2 = Desktop computer with no internet connection

1 - Connect C1 to C2 with crossover cable
2 - Assign IP 10.1.1.1 to C1
3 - Assign IP 10.1.1.2 to C2
4 - Enable ICS on C1

Sound right?

I'm sure back in the days of using cross over cables I had to set up a proxy server on the PC that doesn't have direct access in IE internet options > connections > LAN settings. This would mean setting the proxy of C2 to 10.1.1.1 in your case.
