Easytune/coretemp differences

Hi all,

I'm trying to get my i7 920 to 4Ghz stable. I've had it running for a while at 3.8 but have been doing some tweeking :D

I can get it to pass the intelburn test, with the temps around 70 which seems fine. That's on air cooling with a Noctua NH-U12P.

However, I just installed Coretemp, and they show way over what EasyTune says. Topping out at just over 90 :(

That's a bit hot for more and I'd prefer to back off a bit if that is the true figure.

So the question is, which is the correct temp?

Easytune6 is the utility that comes with Gigabyte motherboards of which mine is a EX58 UD3R

Thanks.

I trust Core Temp, this reads actual core temps, the Gigabyte Easy Tune I think reads cpu temp - which could be read by the socket or by the heatspreader.

Hi IndieSchmindie and welcome to the forums.

Are you using auto voltage settings in the bios or the gigabyte software to overclock, auto settings can overvolt certain voltage settings leading to an increase in temps, same can apply to certain windows based overclocking utilities.

That voltage does seem extremely high for 4ghz, im assuming that your cpu is a newer DO stepping. As an example im running 4ghz on 1.2750 volts.

Have managed to get the vcore down to 1.35 in BIOS (shows 1.32 in CPUZ) and up to 4.0 by raising the DRAM to 1.7 (It's rated at 1.66). It's sort of stable in that it will pass the intel burn at standard and high. It will also run encording video all fine at 4.0ghz with temps now in the mid to high 70's.

It still occasionally errors or blue screens if I run the intel burn to maximum though.

Any other tweaks, or should I be happy with this?
