To cut a long story short, I bought an item off ebay but am returning it for a refund. I have been in contact with the seller via the messaging system and he's happy to take back the item and refund less P&P.

My question is whether this is the correct way to go about returning the item or should I Request a return in ebay's Resolutions Centre?

Just want to make sure I cover all areas.

Thanks

Is the item faulty or have you just changed your mind/ don't like it?
If its faulty then I would say thet he should cover all costs.
If its because you don't want the item then it seems fair enough that you pay the postage, why should he be out of pocket.

Business or personal?

Business would have an obligation to refund the full amount. Personal, no rules!

Don't think it matters on Ebay whether it was business or personal. It's just an auction site, the sales of goods act doesn't come into it. But as far as Ebay is concerned as a buyer you are more than covered.

If the item wasn't as described the buyer should be refunding you the whole lot. Just remember to send it back recorded or special as it will be very easy for the buyer to say he never received it back.

Trust me, it still matters. However, if its an actual auction listing, then it is different (I forgot to mention it!). All Buy It Now items are covered under the SOGA and DSR rules (assuming they are registered as a business seller).

Thanks for more input guys. Its a personal seller. I'm not too fussed about the postage, just wanting to make sure I go through the correct procedure to claim refund on value of item.
I'll definitely sent it with a form of tracking.

Sounds like you are doing it the right way, out of curiosity what was it and what was wrong..visions of a blow up doll with no holes in my mind atm due to lack of other info.

lol.
It was a camera lens described as having a few cleaning marks on the rear elements. When received it was more than a few cleaning marks in my opinion. Pics were coming out hazy

If the item isnt as advertised then I would have filed a "Item not as described" report with ebay.
That way there is a proper record of events and you would be entitled to a full refund if your case was proven.

They aren't simply 'cleaning marks' ... that should be returned for a full refund including postage.

it doesnt matter if its business or personal ebay still screws the seller most of the time. I would go through resolution channels just so there is a paper trail if he denies it being returned, then paypal will stick its size 10's in

I sent it on Monday and the seller received it on Tuesday. He's refunded as agreed cost of item (less postage). For me this is outcome is fine with me.
Thanks for your input guys, t'is much appreciated.
