I don't use paypal much but I was wondering if any one here who is quite switched on could help me.

I put a Faulty Dell laptop for sale on ebay just for parts, someone approached me and offered me £50 for it which I said yes.

He offered to pay with paypal, now he does have an address in England but it raised alarm bells because obviously I'm not doing this through ebay and he didnt send me paypal gift.

"Reversal

Please be aware that your payment can still be reversed, (e.g. if it is subject to a chargeback), even after you have sent the item to your buyer. Complying with PayPal's protection programmes and following the trading guidelines given in our Safety Advice helps to protect you from things like chargebacks."

Now I'm not being funny, I appreciate the guy needs to protect himself as well but call me cynical why would I send the guy the laptop if he can just take the payment back?

You could simply not send the item, that's why.

It protection for the buyer as straightaway he is down on the deal. In a buyers world, you have the money and the goods.

So how can I sell this? Without getting burned

  • Put it on ebay.
  • Sell it through ebay.
  • Give it an accurate description and photos
  • Send it by recorded delivery/courier

Alternatively try selling it on the members market here and only accept payment via bank transfer

Surely if you sell through paypal and get proof of postage (signed for delivery) you are covered? If he claims he never received it you have proof of postage?
If he claims he didn't sign for it then he has to take it up with postal service

I believe you are only covered if it were sold via ebay?

That's a poor setup. How does it work with companies that use paypal for transactions but not through ebay ?

edit - According to paypals site:
•You must obtain proof of delivery that can be tracked online.
•Seller Protection covers physical items only. Check that the item is eligible in the 'Transaction Details' in your PayPal account and in your confirmation email.
•Eligible transactions between buyers and sellers in the UK, US and Canada qualify for Seller Protection. If you're selling on eBay, you can post to buyers in any of the 190 countries where PayPal is accepted and still be covered.
•Only post to the buyer's address provided in the 'Transaction Details' and only accept payments in full from a single PayPal account.
•If you deliver an item in person or post it in any other way that can't be tracked, you won't be covered

You are covered via paypal even if you don't sell via ebay. OP just go ahead and send, but take photos of the laptop, laptop in the box you send it in, and use a recorded + insured service.

OTOH, you are not covered on ebay if you don't use paypal.
