Ebay Rant... how to make it better ?? any alternatives

i stopped using ebay when they started raping you for fees. still buy stuff from there though.

Yeah I'm pretty sure that their final fee was 4% when I first signed up in 2001. It was a bit more expensive to list back then, but the 4% final fee still worked out cheaper than the 10% we have to pay now.

i just wish you could make it so only UK accounts could bid on your auction as nearly every item ive listed is followed by a reply of 'i live in XXXXXX how much is shipping' even though all my items are stated as UK only in the listing

edit: also where else could i of sold 2 broken phones for over £100 in total :)

I thought you could? I have some permissions set up, some geographical and others based on feedback and payment methods associated to accounts etc.

The fees are pretty high considering the amount of items listed, surely they dont need such high fees to still be minted.....

Either way its not the actual place that bothers me when selling. Its the people that buy the stuff. 50% of the time its a idiot who doesnt have the slightest clue what theyre actually buying e.g. Sold a couple sticks of ddr3 ecc memory that was bought for me by mistake as a present (that worked out well) so I though I would sell them on fairly cheaply (bad idea). Sold both sticks off after getting them checked at a pc centre to see if they are all working, with a buy out of around £25 each with the advert stating that its ecc, server memory, check that it will be compatible, check with motherboard manufacturer before buying... low and behond 2 days after sending them out I recieve messages 'doesnt work in my botherboard. I want money back or new memory' and 'id doesnt work in my computer. You sure they are ok???' and after repeating the check if its compatible on your mobos website etc i get a green feedback (from the guy who genuinly made a mistake) and a red (from the 1st guy) all because he screwed up and I wouldnt lose money correcting him (did state no returns).....

I sold a computer game for £10. The buyer complained that the installation disc was faulty. Cue a dozen emails of diagnostics, to no avail. She didn't even know which version of Windows she had, bless her. I paid refund, got the game back. Lo and behold, disc installed fine on my 2 PCs. I re-listed, sold to another buyer. Game once again installed fine at their end, cue positive feedback. Shame I only got £5 for it the 2nd time round.

But yeah, eBay is still great for buying.

its a sellers market for sure. the stuff i sell for £100 on ebay well.... lets just say if i listed it on MM you would laugh me out the door for listing so high. i start my auctions at £1 and they always go past £100. not my fault just people presuming ebay is cheap.

Ebay is indeed full of idiots - Both idiots who buy things they know nothing about and idiots who pay more for an item than OCUK sell it for!

I do question the following though:
I bid on an item (for arguements sake a 2nd hand 5770).
The seller's mate bids on the item for him to make the seller more money. If the seller's mate wins by accident, then the seller would 2nd chance offer me the item.

yeah very common with bidding on mates auctions,

I hate eBay. Haven't used it in months but thought i'd flog a Hugo Boss polo shirt that I have never worn, brand new and was about £60 so I was expecting to get half that. Put the price up at 99p, buy it now at £40. Someone named Julia bought it and then emailed me after saying she misread the buy it now as £4 so she doesn't want it. *bangs head on desk*

imo if you don't pay within a certain time then ebay should automatically charge your credit card plus a late payment fee.

Sold the gf's broken laptop on there, listed as non working with faults described.
Put in large red text three times that this was strictly spares or repairs, sold as non working. Got an email off the winning bidder after the auction ended, "just want the confirm that the laptop is in full working order..." GRRRrrrrrr.

My sisters husaband is a total **** on ebay. He boasts amount of stuff hes recieved then gone on to claim it never arrived, must be a few grands worth by now. Forwarded his email/username to ebay and they werent interested, wont be using their site again any time soon :(.

Im dealing with this exact same situation just now. Granted im selling fairly low value items games/dvds etc but more and more people are not paying and more frustratingly not replying to emails.

im sure in the early days you got a proper slap on the wrist for non payment! why don't they crack down on them!

and yes... if you sell any elertical goods make sure you post recorded and mate not of all S/N its very common for someone with a broken item to buy one from ebay and then say your one is duff...

Non payment does seem to be a major issue now.

Personally I have been having non payment issues with about 1 in 5 now.

Getting cheesed off with it tbh

I love the anti-EBay posts.
Because I simply read them as quirky - because I've been using it for a very long time and I just do not see any of the problems others see.

First take out all this "They charge me blah, blah for buying and selling".
They are not there for the sake of it, they are there to make a profit.
If you can find another site that won't charge and give you access to potentially millions of worldwide buyers then go use them.
For the sheer amount of potential buyers -this is why you pay fee's.

Now at this very moment I have a rating of 210.
Not amazing compared to others, but unlike many these are all for standard buys and sells - I haven't "power sold" cheap items to raise my standings.

I have only once had a non-payer.
I raised the non-payer dispute and in the end the second place man who offered £2 less took it instead.
No biggie and I lost out on £2 minus costs.

I have had one person try to raise an issue against me as a seller.
He purchased Windows 7 HP Full Retail from me and claimed I told him he could run it on any number of machines.
I explained this was try so long as it was oly ever installed on one machine at any one time.
EBay took my evidence and ruled in my favour.

I've had to raise one issue as a buyer when I was sold some fake goods.
EBay were extremely good and quick in sorting this issue out for me so I wasn't out of pocket.

Finally I was scammed once out of approx. £25 worth of goods, buyer claimed he never received them.
I on the other hand am pretty sure he did.
However that one scam tought me a lesson and now nothig I sell for £20+ is sent anything lower than RM Special Delivery.
Means I have to charge that extra £5 for postage - but it always means I won't lose a dispute.

Now if I can get buy using Ebay for a long time and that is the extent of my "issues" I don't understand how people get so many problems.
I just stick by a few of my own rules:

1. Ebay is not the place to sell mobile phones
2. Always use RM Special Delivery or similar for items sold at £20+
3. Only ever send to confirmed addresses
4. Using buying resrictions, don't allow people with rating -1, with non-payer marks or people outside of England

4 simple rules and the results of me sticking to those rules are above.

He's an imbecile. Never mind eBay, report him to the cops => that's simply fraud!

How about when somebody buys something wants to go pick it up that night but then is put off by the seller saying he is busy, Then the buyer says you can pick the item up 5 days later :/
**** him, I went off & bought a different item which i could pick up immedietly.
My feedback states how quick i deal & I Always contact first stating i want a quick deal. If the seller messes me about I **** him off & go elsewhere.

Just a different angle. ;)

You should check before you buy.

also @ the OP: 2nd chance offer.

I've never seen the big deal of shill bidding. If I bid £100 for an item then I'm agreeing to pay upto that amount. If the auction ends for £95 then I have already agreed to pay this amount. So even if the sellers' mate bumped the price up from £70 to £95, It's tough really.
