I tried to buy something from eBay yesterday, all went well and I woke up to two emails, one telling me I'd won and then another one telling me that the order had been cancelled.

It wasn't for anything particularly exciting or expensive, I'm just a bit sad.

I have had this happen a few times lately. Its probably because they advertise items that they have purchased at previously at the same price or they dont check prices often or have price feeds from suppliers. As things have gone up by silly amounts you place the order, they get the order and try to place with supplier, its loads more than they have sold it for and they just cancel the order. That said its normally a few hours or the next day thats its cancelled. I have however also had it do it pretty much straight away as well which is weird and i cant see the reasoning behind that unless it is some sort of scam with ebay transactions.

Yes I think people just test the water for pricing and then cancel & sell by another means gumtree/fbook, sports equipment I'm following often has that outcome.
hopefully ebay prevents a re-listing, do they impose any financial charge - guess you can't leave a negative report.

I've had this happen. I've always assumed they think it should have sold for more, so cancel the sale.
Usually this, I think you can leave feedback on it and give your opinion. I did it once when a seller cancelled after the end because I had won something below what they wanted. Left the feedback to warn others of it.

I actually did this for the first time the other day.

I was selling collection only speakers and had two bids on it and it was upto about £91

Some guy offered me £160 cash but was going on holiday and wanted them ASAP. I didn't have an offer or buy it now price on the auction, so after he collected them, I cancelled it so I didn't have to pay any fees.

NB: There was 4 days to go still on the item.

I think if the item appears in your sold section on my ebay you can also file a report, esp do this if he relists it.

Sometimes this happens with niche items which don't have high demand. Seller will list an item and it doesn't sell so ebay will automatically relist it again and again and the seller doesn't notice. Eventually it'll sell months later and the seller has now lost it or sold it elsewhere.

That's not what happened for your item though, he just didn't get as much money as he'd wanted and cancelled.

Had this happen before where it sells for less than they think it's worth and their friend forget to up the bids to a price they were happy with.

Keeps happening to me when I try and buy UHD Blu-rays, almost every time it gets cancelled right before I win.
