Can someone please explain why people bid days prior to the day sold (I mean surely everyone wants a bargain... its going to get sniped anyway... why)?

I mean... are these people dumb or is it all nasty shilllords?

It's fun to push up the price so the snipers can't get as much of a bargain as they might otherwise :p

Don't hate me.

I bid before and i don't really see what difference it makes. i just set my maximum bid and leave it, when i bid doesn't change what i'm willing to pay?

what does annoy and confuse me though is seeing used items sell for more than you can "buy it now" new from other sellers.

Because thats the point of bidding.

Snipers are the ones doing it wrong, might as well be a case of buy the item for whatever price your willing to pay with a chance of failure

Nah snipers are doing it right.

It's ebay that's doing it wrong for not extending the bidding time when a new bid comes in. The auction should not close until the last bid time + 5 mins, or something like that.

Having fixed ending times is something no auction house except ebay does.

I remember suggesting this years ago. Would be so simple to implement.

I place bids days before they end. I put in a fair price if I'm outbided, it's not worth buying. I can't be bothered with this sniping.

I place a bid of an amount I am prepared to pay and then I step away from it. Not interested in a last minute bid frenzy.

Snipers get better prices or a higher likelihood of a win at your target price.

The psychology of such a setup means that early bidding is more likely to lead to being beaten by a just-one-more punter, of which there are loads.

Because nobody understands how ebay works. Trying to explain it to anyone non tech at all is impossible.

Everyone should put the bid in of the max they are willing to pay. The person who wins then gets it at the fair price. It is best for everyone involved.

I don't get involved with snipers anymore, just put my bid in and if I lose, I didn't want to pay that anyway.

Then there's people starting their sale at 99p for a £3k item... like, gee... alright.

There's quite sound logic in that. It attracts more potential buyers earlier on in the sale than say a £3000 item that is sat at £2900 with no bids on. Once people have their first bid on an item they're more likely to stick with that particular listing and then often bid beyond what they originally wanted to pay for it.

Years ago, back when Yahoo had auctions that's how they worked. No snipping and items had more chance of getting a fair price.

At that time the content on Yahoo's auctions was also much better than on eBay; especially on the computer side.

Unfortunately eBay won the battle and we have what we have now which is basically a platform for people selling imported tat from China.

Yeah but you're assuming people act rationally, like yourself.

It's well known that if some people get outbid, they will consider bidding again, even past the amount they'd consider a good price.

"Not wanting to lose the auction" is a very real thing with some people. "Just one more bid", etc. Sniping doesn't give that kind of person a chance to bid again.

Against someone with your mindset obviously sniping is not effective. But the sniper doesn't know who he's up against. Better to snipe and not risk getting into a war with the "just one more bid" people. *ESP* if you are one of those people yourself! Then sniping saves you cash too!!
