Ebay...

I decide how much the item is worth to me, then place my maximum bid.

If someone outbids me, I forget about the item and move on.

Can someone please explain why people bid days prior to the day sold (I mean surely everyone wants a bargain... its going to get sniped anyway... why)?

I mean... are these people dumb or is it all nasty shilllords?

Because they're dumb or inexperienced... come on, we've all been there, done that, had our backsides handed to us on a plate!

Once after i'd figured out the sniping game and still low rated I got a message from another much higher rated buyer after beating him which read - "well done!" :p

Because nobody understands how ebay works. Trying to explain it to anyone non tech at all is impossible.

Everyone should put the bid in of the max they are willing to pay. The person who wins then gets it at the fair price. It is best for everyone involved.

I don't get involved with snipers anymore, just put my bid in and if I lose, I didn't want to pay that anyway.

This, this and this.

Ive not bid on anything for years,Too many people using those auto software or whatever it is and cheating to get the item.

i only BIN!

Oh, and this.

It all depends on your psychology. Some people get drawn into the gamification of Ebay - "I'll just go another few quid" - early bids are likely to get outbid by people like this, other people just bid the amount they want to bid to and walk away if it goes higher.

It's nothing to do with people being "dumb" or "stupid".

The current ebay system does not favour snipers or early bidders. Snipers always run the risk of late bidding or under bidding with no chance to mull over a second bid, where casual early bidders will lose the item if it goes above their max drive and will get it if it is below their maximum price. The mentality difference is one is hunting for a bargain at the risk of not getting one, the other has made on offer under and including the worth of the item and therefore has dedicated to buy it for up to what they think it is worth paying.

It is just a different kind of mentality, nothing to do with being dumb or stupid. I personally think it is dumb or stupid to think everyone uses Ebay with the same mentality.

I will quite often put bid after bid on an item just to see where its at.

For example. Item for sale starting bid 99p. One bidder.

Put in £1.99 and find that hes still the highest bidder. increase again. Repeat.

If you do it right you dont end up being top bidder but you know exactly what the current top bid is. And then I will leave a snipe bid at the maximum I am prepared to pay.

SO you quite often see on the auctions I win, I may have bidded 20 times in the early days and then one final bid at the end.

Or you could set your maximum bid at the beginning and forget the nonsense? ;)

All you are really doing is increasing the likelihood that the highest bidder will get an email saying they've been outbid and re-enter in to the mix.

Also you may notice that Items with strong early bidders tend to end up with less attention or watchers(in my experience), than late game bidfests.

Rather than spend time and effort chasing bids and making sure i am free at time xx pm or yy am, I just put down a max amount i am willing to pay. I either win it or i dont, if i win it, then happy days, if i dont, then it was too pricey and out of my control.

If there are no bids I will occasionally put in an early bid as a hedge against me forgetting to bid before the end plus it makes it harder for the auction to get pulled due to the seller selling elsewhere or similar.

If there are already bids then I tend to leave it until the end rather than just pushing the price up.

I place bids days before they end. I put in a fair price if I'm outbided, it's not worth buying. I can't be bothered with this sniping.

This for me aswell, I'll stick a bid in with the price I'm happy paying if it goes over that then oh well.

If someone outbids me, I forget about the item and move on.

I do this but I snipe it so I am less likely to get outbid by someone thinking ooh just a pound more (over and over until they have massively over paid!)

I'll watch an item but check on it ten minutes before it ends, I'll keep an eye on the price and if it goes over what I'm willing to pay, I wont bid. If its still looking tempting a minute before it ends I'll chuck a bid in, see if that makes me highest or not, then I'll bid my max during that final minute, items in demand usually sell for a price I wouldn't consider a bargain so I'm never too bothered about losing out.
