I'm booked in for an ECG (that's electrocardiogram, for the same of disambiguation) tomorrow as I've had some mild chest pain recently, but though I know what an ECG is, I don't know what to expect. I'm sure there are people here who've been 'probed', so would you be willing to share your experience?

PS - as per the rules, no medical advice - I have already been to my GP for that, thanks. :)

If you have a hairy chest, like me, the worst bit is having a few patches shaved. Looks silly for months. Apart from that nothing to worry about.

i was given an ECG about 3 weeks ago for a head injury o_O

they did it twice because they had some funny readings. turns out it was meant for the guy next to me...

lesson... don't go newham general :-p

on a more serious note all they do is stick some sensors to your chest and take a reading. takes less than a minute.

Had one for my class 1 medical..

they put like sticky electrode things on your ankles, wrists + chests then plug a lot of wires onto these electrodes then these wires into a machine. This machine just picks up the electrical signals from your heart and the doc checks if they're okay.

nothing painful.. just sit back and relax.

had loads of them done, shave off a few hairs , stick some pads on and its all over in a couple of mins

the procedure is nothing at all to worry about :)

What 'e said :p

Yup that's pretty much it, they put some cold electro-conducting gunk on your chest and various bits of you and have to shave patches if it doesn't attach properly :p

Then you just sit there, and it prints out your heartbeat pattern (PQRS waves and all that malarkey). Ta-da!

Thanks - that's pretty much what I thought - but didn't want to get any nasty surprises.

Looking forward to being slightly less hairy (if a little silly looking) this time tomorrow. :D

If this doesn't get the results they want, then it's off to run up a treadmill and stuff. Now, that's scary.

Yep pretty much everyone has described it to a tee. I've got one next week (hopefully my last visit confirming all is well).

The only annoying heart monitoring I've had done is the ultrasound part (I hate the noise and the cold gel) and when you take a 24 hour ECG. That's annoying because you can't shower or bath with the patches on!

I had one for my class 2 medical (for private flying) and it's nothing. Takes about 10 minutes.

My problem was that I was sweating buckets about the blood test (not related to the ECG) that they were going to do afterwards (I hate needles!) so my heart rate was through the roof. Still passed though :D.

Edit: OMG I've turned into Angus Higgins (my above post was reminiscent of his bracketing system [which he often uses on this forum]).

The blood test was yesterday for me - the only bad thing about that was that it was a fasting one, so no eating. Grrr. :)

Thanks all - everything seemed to go well and I don't have any bald patches.

Though I do now have something of an understanding for what Immac or Veet or whatever it is feels like. Ouch. :)

Had loads as said its nothing, few straps and sensord on legs and erms and thats it but. I have had all sorts including an echo cardio gram which is freaky as its an ultrasound on your heart and it lasts aboyt 25 mins and you can hear and see your heart. Getting a 24 hour heart rate was worst as they sand your skin so they can attach the pads do they stay on for 24 hrs.
