Hello All

Long time since i've posted on here.

General question.

A mate has been buying a Seat Leon 1.9 TDI (90bhp), and now thinks it's too sluggish. He's thinking about getting an ECU remap. I've also toyed with the idea of getting my BMW 320d (150bhp) done but thought against it for one reason or another. Anyway, has anybody (or do you know anybody) have any experiences of getting these done and basically is it worth it?

Cheers

My mate got his leon tdi done and was like night and day. So much more useable torque, well worth it. I think his was the 110bhp version though.

both cars would be looking at an increase of around 35bhp and 56 lb/ft of torque, so definitely worth it imo :)

I've not had a derv done, but have had my other one done and the difference if you get a good map is light and day.

I would recommend

http://www.evolutionchips.com/

The business is owned by Stu who runs Motorsport Developments in Blackpool, and is a top, top mapper. He actually writes all the maps which are then fitted by one of his local dealers.

It would be worth it for sure.

the only horror stories I've heard are from small independant mappers, things like them taking their money without actually changing the map at all!

custom-code and jabbasport are both good for VAG, angel tuning are also good and could do both the leon and the bmw. custom-code and angel tunings generic maps go for good gains while maintaining driveability and reliability, unlike some mappers who will try and squeeze every last bhp out the engine at the expense of everything else. Jabba are custom so can do what you please

I also had one of their maps on my Leon Cupra R - And it was spot on.

Had many cars remapped now, all bar one have been fine, alfa 156 2.4jtd turbo blew up after 3 days of being remapped, having said that im 100% sure it was dodgy to begin with as when the replacement turbo was fitted it sounded totally different. My advice would be before getting it remapped to make sure the car is running perfectly first, that way less chance of anything going wrong

Dont the clutch and gearbox wear out quicker?

not really, if you get a map that isn't pushing everything to its limits

clutch maybe a little quicker due to the increased power but a map within the gearboxes limits won't really affect that

I'd be a bit wary of Angel. Have heard a few stories where the 'standard' maps they've installed have been too aggressive and have resulted in too much overfueling, smokey diesels, and even smokey NA cars with the associated headaches caused by that.

^ Very true. They told a few Punto JTD owners it would be running at 130BHP. They had it on the dyno and it was over-fueling and only managed 95BHP and smoked a lot. Red Dot are also very good.

that's weird, I know a lot of people who have used angel with no problems, really well respected in the alfa, fiat, VAG world.

If you google them all you get is forum posts of happy customers, including:

I have a Fiat Stilo 1.9 JTD remapped by them. I have their 155bhp map on it (standard is 115bhp). I also have a BMC CDA recomended by Nigel, one of the guys that runs it. the car was rolling roaded the other day at 166 BHP.

I suppose it depends on the mapper. I'd highly recommend you go to a place that does before and after dyno runs and does not use generic maps.

OP, where are you located?

i dunno, all they have to do is plug a laptop into the obd port then flash it, can't really do that wrong.

Everyone would like a custom map but when you get deals offering generic maps for £150-£200.. you'll pay 2/3/4 times more for a custom rolling road re-map

edit: saying that, there are parts of the map that are adjustable, the fueling being one of them, e.g. you can map to normal or super unleaded. Maybe it was something along those lines the mapper had cocked up

115bhp to 166bhp? LOL.

That Fiat will be leaving a trail of soot down the road everytime you gun it. Hate to think what all that soot build up is doing to the rest of the engine. You'll never going to get +10bhp from a CDA either.

Not many people realise this but Angela originally bought a limited number of car specific maps from Red Dot. Now Angel seem to have maps for every single car under the sun. My money's not on those maps being car or engine specific....
