Does anyone know if any supermarkets sell these beans in their shells?

I want to get them to make for a healthy snack, had them at a Japanese restaurant recently and they were really nice. Steamed with some salt or chilli.

Unfortunately from my limited searching it seems they don't sell them.

If not, anyone buy them or know a good place to source them from? I do have two Chinese 'cash & carry' places locally which I will have to try as well.

Thanks.

Are these just peas in a pod? If so, Tesco and ASDA both sell them. If they are some fancy, Japanese thing then I can't help.

What a bizarre thing to post. Have you been on the gin again?

Waitrose, M&S and Tesco used to sell fresh beans in the pods, but I think that was a result of them being the 'in' thing over the past few years as none of them seem to list them at present.

You used to also be able to get them frozen in bags, but I can't see those listed either.

Best place for you to look in the meantime would be your local Asian supermarkets - I'd be very surprised if you weren't able to find them.

I should have known better, I admit. My Japanese food knowledge is severely lacking. Are these things tasty then? I'm planning a trip to my Oriental supermarket this week.

If you cook them up with loads of salt and pepper they taste like slightly salty and peppery soy beans.

Quite nice and somewhat moreish, but you can't help feeling that the healthy aspect of them is negated somewhat by piling a shedload of salt.

The best thing that came out of the whole 'Edamame' fad was, for me, the little keyrings you could order from the Far East. Very cute little things, although rather easy to misplace.

A-ha! Tesco do sell them, albeit frozen.

I had to frequent my local Tesco anyway to grab some other groceries, so I popped a bag of these in my basket while I was there.

And having opened them, they ought to be exactly what our OP is looking for.

Unless he wants them in the pod. :p

I buy frozen for salads, but nothing beats them in the pod at Wagamama's!

Just to bump this, I've checked Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons and Waitrose over the last week and couldn't find any fresh ones still in their pods. Anyone come across them anywhere lately?

Will settle for frozen beans on their own if not.

Have you considered trying to substitute with Ahleckz's kind-of suggestion? They might not be exactly right but fresh and in the pod vs frozen 'peas' might make for a much more tasty snack.

Peas and Edamame beans taste different imo. I am in London on Tuesday though, so will take up the other suggestion of trying a shop in China Town if time permits.

No arguments there. I would obviously go for "the real deal" if possible. I'm just saying that frozen edamame might be worse than fresh peas in a pod.

We get them from time to time in frozen form on the Edgeware road. Never seen them fresh other than in M&S salad area. They are very tasty and healthy lightly steamed.
