I have been looking into getting a 5.1 system over the last few days and have been struggling to find a decent system for around the £300 price point.

I first started off with considering the yamaha yht-2910 (£280)
Pro's
Good brand
Con's
don't need the hdmi connections

then I found logitecs z906, the replacement for the so popular z5500 (found this for £208)
Pro's
has all the connections I was after
Con's
unsure about speaker quality from a keyboard and mouse company

Further research and I found the edifier s550 (£350 @ overclockers)
Pro's
Great quality
Con's
No optical... (As mentioned here http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18234291 )

then I think I have found the silver lining that I was after, the edifier S760D - same as the s550 but with the optical built in!

Unfortunately I can not find anywhere that sells them here in the UK, so here is 2 questions.

1. will overclockers stock these? as they are only one of a few retailers to stock the s550 encore

2. if not can anyone recommend an alternative setup to these, ideally I need line in, optical and rca. 5.1 to work with my PC and console (thus the need for optical) looking for dual drivers for satellites (voice coil and tweets) and available in the UK... every recommendation over the web are mainly for the US :(

Done some more research, im considering getting the s550's and a DAC?

Any advice? would a DAC ruin the quality?

still any other alternatives available in the UK?

From a sound quality point of view, it would not ruin anything, as a DAC is always part of the chain when converting digital audio data into an analogue signal, which is then converted into sound.

The problem with connecting a DAC to the digital output on a console, is that DACs are commonly just stereo. You'd need one to take Dolby Digital in and output 5.1 analogue channels. That is mostly the domain of computer sound cards.

Not sure if OcUK will be getting the S760D. Twst will know whether it's a possibility or not.
