Edinburgh - What to See and Do?

There's loads to see and do.

Depends what you like?

Personally what I enjoyed most was the Galleries (there's two in the middle of town and one with modern art fairly far out) and the castle.

I hear the whisky tour is fantastic. The museum of edinburgh life was a bit naff. Really nice city just to walk around too.

I went in July and enjoyed;

The Castle
The Grass Market area in general
Our Dynamic Earth
Frankensteins Pub
The Edinburgh Museum
The Toy Museum - VERY CREEPY
There is a nice garden but I don't remember what it was called!
Auld Reekie Vault tour - was very fun!

In general it was a very pleasant place to visit and I'd like to go back.

Things to note;

It wasn't term time when I went and was quite quiet as the students seemed to be hibernating. I'm not sure how busy it usually is.

The Zoo was VERY depressing; the enclosures were the worst I've seen outside of an animal charity advert.

Don't stay in the Novotel on Lauriston Street. It was plop.

Some pubs weren't letting groups of over three men in at a time for some reason?

All in all I'd go back again!

We won't be going to the Zoo as my girlfriend doesn't like them.

I don't mind art galleries but modern art isn't really for me. Might have a look at them online and see what kind of art they have.

Our Dynamic Earth sounds good so will have to investigate into that.

Anyone else want to suggest anything?

Maybe some good places to eat?

Did you see the panda there - my lad wants to see one and thought could do that on a visit one day - but if it looks like its in a carp enclosure then I dont know if I want to take him to see that...

There is the museum on the mound, right in the center(well up the top of the mound), small, but you get to see what one million pounds looks like and it's free. It's a monetary related museum.

That was the main reason we went; however, we didn't realise that there was some sort of ticket/booking system in place for seeing the pandas.

They are behind closed doors so unless you have a ticket, you can't see anything at all - I'd check the website to see what's what. I can't comment on that particular enclosure but we felt the enclosures in general were small and badly maintained. If he's likely to get upset by such things it's probably an idea to stay away :(

Leith has a couple of Michelin starred places, and is meant to be quite nice place to go in the evening. You can walk there from Edinburgh, only 2 miles from Waverly.
I know a couple of girls who go weak at the knees for Tigerlilly as well.

The Castle is worth a visit IMO though it's quite expensive IIRC.

Are you from England? If so, I'd pop your head into the Ghillie Dhu one night and join the dancing. It's only a few quid in, and before each dance they show you how to do it. It's good fun.

Oh, I almost forgot. Come to Glasgow instead, it's better. :p

I'm not keen on the Zoo either it has to be said, they have wanted to expand for a long time except its even more hill and expensive land at that. I would recommend the highland wildlife park if you had the chance... great place.

Alheckz, one day maybe just, you will come to release that Leith is apart of Edinburgh.. ;)

Whisky tour on top of royal mile + camera obscura.
Greyfriars graveyard, you can walk around in the daytime or take a spooky night time guided tour.
National Museum of scotland (free)
National Galery of Scotland.
Shopping on Princes + Queen street
Princes Street Gardens

Longer Trips:
Deep Sea World on North queens ferry is very cool.
Take a 30 minute train to Stirling and see the much better Stirling Castle

That's the Bank of Scotland head office. I've never actually been in their museum much to my eternal shame.

The National Museum of Scotland is excellent but you need at least half a day at the very minimum to make a worthwhile gander.

Yea, like Scotland is part of England. :D

Stirling is only better at night in my opinion, and from the outside..

Leith is part of Edinburgh (Live there). Nice place btw. But as ever be careful in new cities.

How about the South Bridge Vaults. There's a chapter about it in my ebook Eerie Britain 2 which is free on Amazon tonight. There's also Mary King's Close and the Covenanter's prison if you want a bit of Hallowe'en fun.

I know a girl who conducted tours of the Vaults and the Close, creepy ass places. Even a lot of people who still refuse to believe in that sort of activity do leave feeling disconcerted or anxious. Staff on their own have had all sorts of experiences.

There was a programme on them at one point, had that little ginger dude from Easties, was quite interesting.

Horrible history!

Thing with the underground close is it tends to be booked in advance iirc, I'd check the website anyway!

The Old Town is awash with interesting stuff to look at and explore.
