Going to Edinburgh Zoo tomorrow with Laurio but trying to decide whether it'll be better to park and ride or go to the Zoo first then park somewhere else and get the bus into Edinburgh for a wonder around the shops. Could always leave the car at the Zoo and get the bus which would work but can't decide which would be best. Anyone live around here and know what the best approach would be?

Thanks in advance :)

zoo has **** own car park which is pretty reasonable (a quid IIRC) very easy to get to so i'd reccomend just driving to the zoo

Went to that zoo about 3 years ago, took the bus and had a great time. Its a lovely zoo, great animals, great staff and we would go back anytime.

Enjoy.

Cheers :) I'll drive to the Zoo hopefully can park and then get the bus after we've been and leave the car there. Assuming it is used by Travelodge or someone else then they shouldn't mind...

The zoo has its own car park, it is large but you may have trouble finding a space during the Easter holidays it will be very busy. The buses are going to be on Saturday service on Easter Monday but because Shandwick Place is closed for tram works i don't know how they are getting to Princes Street. The zoo is about twenty minutes walk from the centre or ten on the bus.
I can't say I'd recommend city centre parking, its expensive and most on street parking is limited in time, in some places to just 15 mins! There are several NCP car parks including one on Castle Terrace which if you can't park at the zoo i would probably recommend using.

Last time I went to edinburgh zoo, which was on a tuesday, the car park was full and there was a que for the car park for a mile long the road.
I just parked in a side street further along.

Would you say park and ride using the Ingliston car park and the X48 bus would be a better way to do it? From what I've read the car park is free and the bus would only be £2.50 each which lets you travel all day.

Castle Terrace is quite expensive, although it's the best place to park if you want to be at the west end. If you're not too bothered, I'd recommend the St James Centre, or the Omni, although they're both a little more complicated to get to than Castle Terrace if you don't know the town at all, but a lot cheaper.

EDIT: Ingliston sounds like a good idea, as there will definately be buses going from there past the zoo and into town - if the X48 follows the A8 then that would be the one to go for.

I have no idea at all about the park and ride other than seeing the occasional bus in town. http://www.lothianbuses.com/parkandride.php <- lothian bus website

Vixen you are right about it being expensive, St John's Hill is also cheaper but its more complicated. I suggest Castle Terrace for the simplicity of location mostly. :)

If you don't mind walking, you could park at Tesco (near OCuKs competitor) and walk. Or is that a longer walk than am imagining in my head?
