Any recommendations for places to eat and things to do and see.

I know the festival starts tomorrow

Edinburgh is such a great place, you're spoiled for choice really.

One place I do not recommend is the Sheep Heid Inn, in Holyrood. Dreadful food! They couldn't even get chips right.

national museum of scotland, zoo, castle, burgers and beers grill house, gin company shop if you like your gin. Lots to do and see though really enjoyed my weekend there

loads of places to eat and do - whats the budget like?

You have michellin places in Leith and Edinburgh City Centre. Personally I love Steak (Piccardy Place) but theres also Honours. To live like a local you need to spend an afternoon drinking buckfast and grab a munchie box on your way home. As for what to do the fringe is on and there are thousands of shows on at the moment.

I dont understand how Scottish country roads can be so perfect but the city streets seem like the surface of the moon.
I swear I saw a pot hole in a pot hole

Quality at the Sheep Heid seems to be very inconsistent.

It's changed recently, much better and consistent now.

Wildfire on Rose Street is well worth a visit for City Centre Scottish noms, Villager on George IV Bridge for pub/food. Get down to Portobello for some guaranteed odd sights on the beach/promenade. Night out on the Shore in Leith can be a bit different from usual City Centre bore.

And yes, the potholes are quite something aren't they.
