editing images for web use?

Hi,

What simple tool can I use to select a portion of the photo, tell it to select say 960px by 400px portion then crop my selection?

Also how do I shrink the file size of the photos down? Some are massive

For resizing photo's I use the Image Resizer. It used to be a microsoft powertoy but has since been kept going as open source. Other programmes such as paint/potoshop etc let you edit and resize. Could try the windows 7 snipping tool then resize as rquired using image resizer?

Probably faster/better ways though so will be interesting to see what people suggest.

Try Paint.net which is free though I have never used it. Other than that Photoshop or Paintshop Pro.
