Morning all,

New to the forums, new to gaming. Basically new to everything, however....

I have a M5A97 R2.0 Mobo with the FX 4100 Cpu.

I'm looking to upgrade the chip but need some guidance on what to go for, it's an old machine so i'm probably best sticking to FX series over Ryzen. Is the 8520 a decent upgrade? And if so, how much should i expect to pay? (Did look for a marketplace here but couldn't locate one).

I'll more than likely buy second hand as it isn't a PC I expect to spend thousands on.

OR.... Would it be worth just going all out and buying a board and CPU second hand? Again, if so, recommendations and guestimate for said recommendations.

Thanks one and all.

Upgrading to that? Nah, it is pretty crap imo. Not sure on your budget, but perhaps a 2600/2700 is cheap.

While I've never rated any of the FX series overall, the FX8320/FX8350 will be the best price/performance upgrade he can get now second hand.
I imagine you can pick one up for about 50 quid or so.

OP, what's the rest of the PC?

The 8320/8300 wasn't a bad processor imo, bit I'd certainly try and save some cash and move to AM4, It's so cheap now it pretty much makes am3+ redundant

Cheers gents. Lots of information to get through on those links and appreciate the feedback.

of course I understand that upgrading to another FX series chip is gonna be subjective in terms of whether it is worth it or not.

in regards to the rest of the PC:

M5A97 R2.0
FX4100
32GB vengeance RAM
Club Radeon R9 280 king 3D GPU
CM 212 Evo CPU cooler (Had to switch the stock one out as it was overheating so put this one in a push/pull config)
Corsair 650w PSU
1TB HDD
320GB Also

can’t recall anything else off of the top of my head.

I am really on a budget. This isn’t an upgrade I need for my needs. It’s just a curiosity at this point.

again, thanks for all of the replies so far.

For the sake of £50 I'd get an FX8320 as an upgrade, as well as an SSD (Although, because you're on AM3+ you can't get an Nvme SSD)

Thanks Buddy.

Best place to look for these? People on Ebay are asking silly money. And of course, I have no idea if it's been overclocked to within an inch of it's life.

Dirt cheap second hand 8320, an SSD, and maybe sell your 280 and pick up a RX580.

Will be decent for 1080P for most games as long as you don't mind lowering settings here and there.

Thanks Buddy.

Forums like these on the members markets, although you're well off being able to buy on the members market here.

Having had a look at Ebay, I find the pricing to be absolutely shocking lol.
You can buy brand new Ryzen CPU's like the 3100X that's better than an FX8320 at £93 (Of course, it's DDR4 and AM4, so not compatible for you).

SSD's I'd shop here for, they're cheap enough for a SATA one.

Am I being stupid? I can’t find the member market?
