EEK! pls help! Bios Erased after flashing? P5K Deluxe

Note here...
Asus P5K Deluxe

Bios chip it isn't replaceable but soldered/fixed on the board it seems. See page 2-3 of manual for the board diagram here. The bios chip is supposedly located at the centre point in between the last PCI3 and PCI-E 2 slot and the red IDE connector location. Directly in alignment with the battery. That would make the bios chip to be the soldered on square chip to the right of the 7 pin header pictured here ? But it has Crash Free 3 bios feature see page 4-7 of manual. Shove the included driver dvd disk the system and boot it up and it should attempt to do a recovery bios flash.

My thoughts in the Thanks Asus Updater - URGENT Help thread.

New Chip

EDIT: LOL Just seen the post 2 above this one, but in any case, this guy does a good job..

Hi All,

I havent really read all the threads in this, so this may have already been said but I had a similar thing with my Abit AW9D Max and messed up the bios.

Abit said they would give me a new chip if I posted the old one blah blah blah.

Anyway to save time and effort, I looked around a little and found this website:

http://www.bios-repair.co.uk

The guy who runs this place offers a top notch sevice and will pre-flash chips for you with the bios rev of your choice.

You could RMA etc, but this guy can have a chip to your door within 1-2 working days. I also have a spare chip now just in case.

Hope this is useful.

well Asus support is clearly rubbish. All my questions were met with "i dont know" so when i asked if they could put me through or give me contact details of someone at Asus who could answer my questions I was told " no sorry" *L*

Still no word from OCUK but it looks like i'll need to RMA the board.

ASUS have gone right down hill imo.

Bought a Blitz that was faulty, reboot loop. Bought a P5K Premium also faulty, find they're dropping like flies with Sata errors. Asus forum is full of it. I've seen dozens of people with bad flashes using their Windows update. I won't be getting another for awhile.

OcUK came through again :) Sent me an RMA within hours and they will replace the board. top notch! Just managed to remove everything and pull out the board . Just need to package it and out to them tomorrow. (I hope they dont need all the other cables and stuff!)

Im certainly going to think twice before going with Asus again. Not that bios flash failures always happen im sure, but the terrible support and releasing a flash program that doesn't work is clearly worng imho.

Still means another weekend without playing bioshock *L*

Sure seems cyclic.......years back, Gigabyte were the mutts.....then ASUS seemed to be the choice......and so it goes on :) ... how about the old Soyo Dragon boards, then ! ;)

Anyway, I kinda like ASUS and Gigabyte, but am not such a fan of ABit....then again, the next guy you ask will probably say exactly the opposite !

I was actually going to go for a Gigabyte D6 but found the noctua fan didn't fit it so i changed to the Asus. I should have just changed the fan instead *L* Doh.

Mind you i have been a loyal Abit customer ever since i started building. hehe!

Do you absolutely have to flash the BIOS on these new boards?

I'm getting one soon and all these horror stories would make me just leave whatever BIOS is on the board alone. I have never updated the BIOS on my board and it's nearly four years old and I have never had a single problem with it.

Why is it necessary with new boards?

The BIOS problems always seem to come form the Windows utility......I believe that the DOS/EZFlash route is trouble-free......

Out of the box , my Asus board showed a "CPU uCode error" which you could skip by pressing F1 and everything worked fine. I understand that this was the bios being unable to fully identify my Q6600 G0 stepped chip. Not sure what impact this has on a system though. Thats why i went to flash the bios but i did it using the window util which is a big no no I've now found. The dos program or flashing from within bios using floppy or USB stick is the way to go.

Well i'll soon find out i guess *L* as i just posted my board so fingers crossed i may get a new one by the weekend. Its then that ill have to go through the dilema of do i flash again or dont i!

the Bios kept coming up with a CPU uCode loading error. MAybe thats why it failed to verify the when flashing?

I've had that error on asus boards before when the BIOS didn't officially support the CPU I was using, but the machine still worked.

I packaged everything in that i could. CD Is still stuck in my drive though. Could get it powered up to open.

Yeah my machine worked fine with the error and i saw a bios option to skip F1 messages so you dont have to press it on each reboot.

Doh forgot about that  oh well its all been package and send now. Have to see if they say anything. Im sure they've got enough coasters in the warehouse already though *L*
