Yep - seen many builds using PCIe ribbons - someone recently did one with an HTPC (can't remember his name though...) and I've got a pic here of a wall-mounted PC using a ribbon for the GPU :)

I think that looks horrible lol. It would look so much better if he hid the cables behind the metal and if he powder coated the metal black.
 
so if it was 6 580s or 6 480s (all same card) what would it be called ? Dual tri SLI ? so each tri SLI setup can be connected by a SLI bridge to give double the performance? smegging epic!
 
I thought those ribbon cables didn't work for PCIE due to the additional latency... guess it's not a problem! I'm surprised it hasn't been done before, especially with previous pushes into making cases with separated heat-zones. Looking forward to seeing more details of this case...

Probably not a huge issue for compute useage as the link in the first post, might be a bit more of a problem for gaming tho.
