Eggs, free range, or doesn't it matter?

I have always found Free Range vs Battery eggs to be a no brainer. Free range just taste so much better, regardless of your moral persuasion.

I personally believe battery hens to be cruel, and that adds another reason for me

did you read any of this thread? battery and free range are the same thing, its just the media ect that have made people think free range chickens spend all day running around a field

Clarence court eggs, blue carton in Sainsbury or Waitrose. Also get free range eggs from the farm, but they aren't as good as the rare breed eggs that Clarence court do. God amongst eggs, even if they do get extra feed.
So of course it matters, both taste and welfare.

+1 these are incredible eggs!

I don't know whether it's down to the welfare, the breed, or both, but they are the best I've tried

Actually the diets of free range eggs are better which is where much of the flavour comes from. Cheap eggs often have much more basic diet consisting of mostly fish protein - less creaminess in the egg yolk and often smaller yolk as a consequence.

There's degrees of freedom.

Caged is caged.

Barn is slightly better, all indoors with room to move.

Free range is like barn with access to an outdoors area.

Organic is generally the highest standard of welfare. Outside and all that, depends on the farm mind.

Clarence Court Burford Browns are amazing. Totally ruin other eggs for you though, even your Waitrose/M&S free range ones!

If anyone says they can't taste/see the difference then they're talking nonsense!

I'll only eat eggs or meat from animals that have been properly cared for. Animals shouldn't suffer needlessly and they taste better if they haven't been unduly stressed.

Always free ranged, they taste better.

We'll start raising our own soon I think even though we eat significantly less egg.

Would never buy caged hen eggs or cheap eggs, it's not just the taste but the likely nutritional value.

It's a bit like saying farmed salmon tastes the same as wild, but wild salmon is known to have much higher quantities of omega 3.

I don't buy eggs often but usually get organic eggs. These (the yolk)are more pale than free range as I think the free range birds are fed with a feed that causes a deeper colour to the yolk (but harmless).

Must try the clarence court eggs mentioned here.

Free range or above, its not really about the taste but animal welfare better quality of life etc.

Same with chicken

Would never not buy free range
This is due to personal and moral reasons (and why I don't buy poultry)

I have quail at home which give me all the eggs I need
And they taste so nice

My father in law's free range chickens;

As mentioned earlier in the thread, approx 50% of the eggs go to Waitrose.

Pic was taken on Saturday shortly after it had rained heavily, so not many venturing out. IIRC, the shed in the pic holds 6,000, he has another two holding 4,000 and 3,000.
