EGR valve problems

Light came on the dash a couple of days ago, car went back to Seat, apparently its the EGR valve that's gone. Not covered under "named component" warranty :-/

I've searched on the seat cupra forums but there's not that much info specific to the mk3 ibiza.

Is the valve expensive?

Can it be replaced yourself?

Will the engine need the fault code resetting after replacing the valve to remove the dash light?

Is cleaning the unit a possibility?

Car is a mk3 Seat Ibiza Cupra

Cheers fellas.

egr can be cleaned, but generally id just buy a new one if it were me! why not phone your dealer and get a guide price, then find one 50% cheaper on th owners club or online.

you might need the fault to be reset professionally in the ecu even when the EGR has been changed.

Diesel?

If so, you don't even really need it and I'm surprised its caused a fault elsewhere. They are reasonably easy to replace yourself and the part shouldn't set you back more than £50

I'm waiting back for the dealer to call me with a part code and/or price etc, but thought I would ask you guys in the mean time.

Its a petrol, 1.8T engine.

You can probably clean it out, see if you can remove it and dismantle it. We did this on my dad's car after it was running a bit rough, sorted it and it's been fine since :) They're usually fairly simple to get to/replace

You will probably need to reset the fault code via VAG-Com. If you ask nicely on the SeatCupra.net forums someone local to you might pop round and do it for you for a beer or two. It's literally a 10 second job!
Also, you could try disconnecting the battery for a while. Just make sure you have the radio code.

£195+vat to get it fitted at seat :o

Any recommendation's other than vag-parts to source the valve myself? :)

can you not just buy it from seat and fit it yourself? i pick parts from nissan and take them to a cheaper local garage to get them fitted...

Could do, they want £110 +vat for the valve though, guessing I can find it cheaper elsewhere. Time to make some calls.

Hope its not too much of a ball ache to fit either !

This happened to mine recently.

Apparantly its only use is to cut back on emissions in the environment... and shouldnt really do any harm to the vehicle itself.

After coming back from the diagnostic check from Seat, The engine light has turned itself off and not come back on again. Im thinking that if there was a problem it would?

My bet is that in my case, they have cleaned the valve and reset the code, but are still trying to charge me for a new one!

I think I'll give cleaning it ago and either get a dealer to reset it / someone from the forums.

Failing that euro car parts are coming out cheapest at £97 inc.

My biggest concern was that the warning light might put the car in to limp mode, but that does not seem to be the case.
