EGR valves?

I got the engine management light come on in my Seat Ibiza, I took it to the dealer who said the EGR valve would need replacing £230 in total!!

Ive read about, and it seems to suggest that this isnt ESSENTIAL for making the car run smoothly and safely.

Anyone else know about these?

Mine is only the 1.2 though, so no turbos or anything, its not about increasing or hampering performance, im just wondering if its safe to not replace this??
