Eight months later update.

VR is not failing

I would say it is failing and its time for the industry to take a serious look at it than a romanticised one - it is not capturing the imagination or hearts of most mainstream consumers and while many are impressed when introduced to it very few have any interest or intention of purchasing a system themselves, its not far off being as big a turkey in respect of consumer purchasing interest in that respect as curved TVs.

I think part of the problem is unrealistic expectations in terms of popular uptake trying to force it as the next big thing just isn't working - the convenience and interface, etc. just isn't there yet to capture a mainstream audience no matter how hard people both industry and enthusiasts see it or try to push it.

Maybe you are right and it will take 10 years to become mainstream, but, I don't think so. I think it will be mainstream in 2 to 3 years. I think the slowest adopters will be those people who can't get beyond the graphics.

Unfortunately I think you are likely wrong on that - based on my reckoning of the tech and software progress required it is closer to 10 years than 2-3 and infact the way the industry has invested into and hence pushing it possibly going to do more damage than good in the short term and actually delay it (i.e. making other investors cautious, etc.).

EDIT: I wonder how a game like city of heroes would work in VR - generally on rails movement in a game like that can be kind of disconcerting but the way the game is (was as it has been shutdown :( ) I think click to move would work in that environment and much of the gameplay could be adapted to work well in VR.

I had DK1 pretty much from the off.

Pricing for the consumer units (as well as the spec, to some degree) put me off purchasing immediately and I haven't thought about it again since, really.

I really enjoy the experience, Truck Sim and Assetto are great.. but outside of that, all the games I want to play are non-VR. We need more games! I was hoping with PSVR coming along we would see more devs getting on board - there's still time for this.

Whilst plenty of people become converted advocates when entering VR, the first murmurs of dissent are definitely there. The honeymoon period is over, it has the feeling of a make-or-break year.

Doesn't help when oculus block 50% of the pc vr userbase from buying their games when they are perfectly capable of running on both hmds.

Last thing that was needed was a fractured user base, it is still very niche

Agreed. Its a peripheral, and a lot of expense on top of graphics cards, what with new controllers sensors & CV2 & whatever else gets cooked up by the community . It needs good games, and upgradeability ease-of-use with everyone working towards a common goal, which is pretty much how it is, apart from facebook trying to be apple. Valve gets it, and bless them for it, they get my money, they would even if revive wasnt here, i'd rather lose what I invested than ally with faceache

I think its ****** great btw. I just hope a load of amazing games get ported, native is so much comfier than hacked on support, i'd love to play older games with proper scaling and huds.

Definitely - I remember playing HL2 on it, the intro is absolutely brilliant for sense of 'there'. Unfortunately, the 'hacked' implementation left a lot to be desired.. it was also one of the worst games IME for nausea.

An Elder Scrolls game would be the ideal one for me personally.

Anyway, going well OT. Glad you're happy OP, I hope to join you guys in VR again soon.

It is awesome for cockpit games, and as I only play racing and space sim stuff it's perfect for me. I think it needs a real lightbulb moment to make full use of the room scale, and unfortunately the games industry has stagnated, with copy paste repeat approaches to most titles/genre. There have been very few "new " concepts over the last few years. I think the breakthrough will probably come from an Indie studio, I certainly wish I had the creativity to come up with the golden ticket game. VR needs something you can't do on a monitor to make it mainstream, and the headsets need to be cheaper realistically as well.

I have an idea for a brilliant game but cant program :/

I'm pretty lucky I dont get motion sickness, or get over it quickly. Apart from seriously high G moments. But I agree with you, 3D RPGs please. Elder scrolls, fallout, also something clean-cyberpunk & JPRG beautiful & monstrous would get my vote for environments I would enjoy. Slow paced as well, I like to soak the atmosphere not burn through the games.

I've got a really good idea for a game that hasnt been done yet, unfortunately my experience is with audio & graphics. I'm trying to get to grips with Unreal VR as we speak. Only had some map & model making success, but we now have Robo Recall to hack, and a new audio engine (it sounds like its going to be a bit of a breakthrough), so hopefully I can at least get an idea across/..

Saw a DK2 kit in the local CEX for £180 and allllmost pulled the trigger. Im a sucker for anything like this but the initial cost has prevented me so far. Can the DK2 still be recommended?

Pity you can't use the MM cos I've got mine up on there for £125 with no interest :(

BattleSky VR

Just green lit this on steam. The game features an 'ironman' style of travel, first seen in the hrv demo (which works incredibly well). I bring this up because if your wanting innovation in the VR space, then this is the way to go.

I want a tribes style game in this manner, jetpacs/men are so within the current limitations
