Hi All,

So I'm considering going watercooling if/when i can secure a new GPU, and was just checking through the attic to see what supplies i already have. I've got an EK Supermacy Evo (Nickel Plexi) and cant seem to find clear guidance on AM4 compatability. i'm 95% sure the hardware i have is AM3 only, but the written documentation just lists it with hardware for "AMx" so isnt super clear.

Anyone know for sure? and if not, whether it's worth buying the mounting for it, or if i'd be better off just buying a new block?

Supremacy Evo did come out prior to AM4, initial support was for

- AMD Socket AM4
- AMD Sockets: 939, 754, 940
- AMD Sockets: AM2, AM2+, AM3, AM3+
- AMD Sockets: FM1, FM2

Later on, after AM4 came out, EK updated the product with the plate and mount in the box: https://www.ekwb.com/news/ek-confirms-amd-socket-am4-compatibility/

If you have the old one, then can grab the new AM4 plate and mount for a few quid: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/ek-water-blocks-amd-socket-bracket-for-am4-wc-9dx-ek.html

I figure as much, the ek page indicates that the updated hardware has the outer holes as slots to be used with either AM3 or AM4, though seeing that store page, that looks a hell of a lot like one of the mounts it came with:

You're not wrong! If you bought it after AM4 came out then they might have started putting it in the packaging, EK used to be pretty reasonable about that kind of thing.

If you have the backplate to go with you may as well give it a try.

I may do, would just be annoying if i tear down my system, only for it not to match up, and have to either be without the pc for a day or two, or have to put the air cooler back on while i wait. I'm still not entire sure if i'll watercool yet or not, depends what gpu i end up getting but it's most likely looking like i'll get an FE, which i've heard people have noise complaints with compared to aib's.

FE is quiet good actually in form of most models. Not the best, but relatively quiet. 3090FE cooler is in another ballpark and very good imo.

I bought an evo supremacy back in 2018 as part of the P360 kit. I did get an AMD backplate and socket plate with the block but the socket plate holes were not aligned with the 5900x mount (AM4 mount). Plus there was a weird rectangular cut out in the socket plate.

At the time I drilled new holes in the socket plate and it fitted okay. Recently I installed a block on the 3090 FE and so decided to install the proper AM4 socket plate - as mentioned above it was only a couple of quid from OCUK

If i remember the original Evo kit was not compatible with AM4, only AM3.. they introduced an upgrade kit which included the relevant jet plates and mounting kit for the AM4 later.

I remember this as i have the old Supremacy kit pre EVO, and rather than dishing out to spend on a new block, i thought i could buy the Evo accessories seperately. Unfortunately for me i wasted more money than i had to since the Supremacy and Supremacy Evo top are machined completely different so the plastic middle part the jet plate sits on were incompatible with one another.

In the end, i ended up buying a Velocity block and still have the Supremacy and Evo parts as spares should i need them

I had an X99 Supremacy EVO which was missing the extra stuff (but very easy to screw in due to being design for stock X99 backplate!). In order to use it with my 5800X I recently picked up the EVO backplate kit (intel/AM4 backplates and rubber gasket) , AM4 mount which also had the backplate but no rubber gasket and I had to gamble on the screws since the EVO PreciseMount does not seem to exist anymore. Got the Quantum Velocity PreciseMount instead and it works fine. Jet plate is probably is not optimal but likely saved me 70+ on a new block.
