I am everywhere...
Back ground story.

Sometimes ago there was a debate over eating left over pizza or not. It quickly got to a debate as to whether all germs can be killed when microwaving a food. I presented my points of how a food micro-waved can kill of all germs but no one listened (even though i produced known evidence of this). As usual people thought i was barking mad and some even went to question the fact that i said am studying Biomedical sciences etc.

I hope the thread is around somewhere.

And now today i found this

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Two minutes in a microwave oven can sterilize most household sponges, U.S. researchers reported on Monday.

A team of engineering researchers at the University of Florida found that two minutes of microwaving on full power killed or inactivated more than 99 percent of bacteria, viruses or parasites, as well as spores, on a kitchen sponge.

"People often put their sponges and scrubbers in the dishwasher, but if they really want to decontaminate them and not just clean them, they should use the microwave," said Gabriel Bitton, a professor of environmental engineering who led the study.

I know this is a sponge but if a microwave can sterillise a spong soaked in germ-infested water then it will surely kill off all germs in a left over food. ...I rest my case :)

I've always cleaned rags in the microwave....

Not as odd as a uni housemate who used to dry his socks, though.... unless he didn't wash them and was merely cleaning them...

I still wouldn't like to eat it but yeah I can understand how it would kill off all germs. Shame I wasn't here to see the thread, was there that much opposition?

Man, It was i was swinming upstream with no flippers, fins, or gas mask man lol - I had no chance with the amount of people who claimed i was talking rubbish.

I have a feeling someone will remember the thread and let you know more about it.

Bacteria starts to die @ above 65°C I believe and between that and 5°C bacteria grows rapidly. Bacteria cannot grow below 5°C but it does not die, even in extreme cold.

Assuming you've microwaved your pizza thoroughly and is hot all the way though, it would kill the bacteria that might have grown if you'd left it on the side all night.

Cold pizza from the fridge is better though.

the microwave it self doesn't get hot at all if there is something inside it that has water/moisture it does something to it and makes it heat up, i dunno what temperature it can get up to tho but i guess pretty hot

Well technically you were wrong!

I presented my points of how a food micro-waved can kill of all germs

The report says over 99% (normally means 99.000000001% lol)

So not ALL germs/bacteria is killed as <1% is still alive and kicking, i'd hazard a guess that this 1% of bacteria is probably the type to do most damage as well?!!? If it can withstand 2 minutes of radiation then it's some hardcore badass bacteria
