I saw the old morrowind game on my mates laptop yesterday and I have to say the graphics are pretty impressive for such an old game.

What are the differences between the old one and the new one (apart from the obvious graphics)

Might pick the old one up until I can upgrade my PC so I can play on MAX settings.

Thanks

For a start:

1) Seven major skills, and no minor.

2) Only two types of armour (light, heavy), and two types of weapon (blade, blunt).

3) You can ride a horse - but not fight from one.

4) Monsters and loot are mostly leveled (currently causing a Holy War on the official forums).

5) You cannot remove corpses, so the respawn rate is much lower.

6) At least at lower levels there are fewer roving nasties.

7) You can cast spells while wielding a weapon (but there is still a time when you are casting, not fighting).

8) The is a more complicated lock-pick system - but you can bypass it.

9) There is a MUCH more complicated speechcraft system - but bribery works just fine.

10) Sneak is a bit more sophisticated.

Yeah, in my opinion Morrowind is the better game, seems to me that Oblivion is "dumbed" down for the console market.

Seems a bit negative! :)

Oblivion has:

> More focused and interesting story.
> Spoken Dialogue and non generic NPCs.
> More indepth character creation.
> Much increased view distance.
> A challenging game for the player throughout.
> A better economy.
> More interactive and "alive" characters via the Radient AI.

Morrowind's journal is abysmal. The Oblivion quest system is a huge upgrade on that at least.

It's also greener whereas Morrowind is more desert-like.

Both these are open to question: if you listen to enough encounters between NPCs you quickly realise that they are using a very limited number of scripted speeches. A bit like MW, except they a) speak them, and b) to each other, not just to you. I've heard the same comments several times in just a few hours of gameplay. Not fatal, but not really an advance either.

I've heard different NPC's in the same location repeat the exact same dialogue within seconds of each other. I've experienced this on a number of occasions.

I've given up playing oblivion, it runs too slowly on my system for it to be enjoyable.

Besides the bad performance, it does feel like there aren't as many quests as morrowind and it has been simplified too much. Anyone else HATE that pointer on the compass for example? half the fun was walking around in morrowind going the wrong way, finding other dungeons just because you took the wrong turning. Also do we really need fast track? it isn't all that big despite what they say, how long will it take to walk/gallop from one town to the next; not long.
I never did finish morrowind, and the gfx are still pretty good, so I think I'll pick it up for 2.99 (my other cd was 'damaged', long story) might as well get the two expansions as well.

has mods available to rid yourself of these things :)

There are interface mods to remove the markers if you don't like them. :)

Give the nVidia tweak a try for your performance issues.

An extra gig of RAM should see you right (esp in dual channel). My specs: AMD 64 3800, 2 Gig 333Mhz Ram (single channel), and XFX 6800GT are aboslutely fine. No problems what so ever in game and have cranked details quite abit from the recommended. Only get the error message sometimes when I exit.

Give it a try - relatively cheap upgrade for a great game. leveling issue aside.

I don't like to admit it but I think this is probably true :(

I was really hoping that Oblivion would live up to the standard set by Morrowind. It does come close, but not close enough in my opinion.

Not to say it's a bad game, just not all I hoped it would be.

I think like Morrowind once the patch comes out it will improve the game ten fold. Hopefully it will include performance tweaks and refinement on the enemys attributes / loot etc.

I think its dumbed down for a younger audience and all those WoW people out there.

Maybe someone will remake morrowind in the oblivion engine :)

Other than an extra 1GB of ram, that's my system, and it runs just fine. My memory isn't even as good and the CPU is overclocked to get to 3200

Texture size set to medium, max draw distance, HDR on, most other sliders towards the low end, but it still looks and runs fantastic.

All im getting is a max of 20fps running at 1280x1024.

I've tried all the tweaks I can find, and the system seems slower if anything.

One of the best tewaks is to turn the grass off. This gives a big boost to FPS in the out door areas. There is a mod that makes the grass shorter this might help also.
