Elder scrolls oblivion.

This was actually the first Open world RPG i'd ever played, and at first it was so overwhelming and amazing to me, the amount of stuff you could do!

I remember walking along the banks around the imperial city lake looking at the beautiful landscape. One time An imperial horseman saw some bandits, jumped off his horse and went to go kill them...I daringly jumped on his horse and galloped for miles till I randomly came across cheydinhal, where when I entered I was arrested and forced to jail, but I resisted, which led to my first death :P

All in all...a truly memorable experience.
I still think Oblivion is great, but the guards always annoyed me - how on earth could the know you had stolen that stuff from a house the other sidfe of the map when nobody saw you, how come they could always recognise you, also must have had some superluminal system of transmitting your exact face to all guards everywhere the instant the guard even saw your back riding away on a horse... I think the guards were secretly minor deities.

there's a mod for that ;)

The joys of the no psychic guards mod, at least addresses it slightly. But it is a tad annoying how overly simplified the whole system is. A lone guard in the middle is killed and somehow he conveys that attack to everyone else.

i remember, the guard in the basement of the imperial tower was not psychic. if you killed him, you got no bounty, so it was a great way to get decent armour as early as possible

Another great source of epic armor early game is venturing into that dungeon with the insane female warrior at the end. Can't for the life of me remember the name of the dungeon but it's the best armour you get for quite some time and it's accessible right at the beginning (if you can kill the warrior that is).
