I've been a user of the mighty wet shave for quite some time (currently using a Gillette Mach 3 Turbo Nitro Pro Ball Race Bearing Touring Car Edition) however I fancy getting a decent electric shaver for xmas as a replacement. One reason is the fact that I only seem to get 4-5 days from each blade which is costing a small fortune !

Keen to hear what you all use, and ones to avoid etc.. aware that spending more seems to offer more, but would appreciate a bit of guidance from your dry shavers !

Cliff uses the phillips cool shave one, you can use it in the shower and you buy gel or lotion packs to put inside it which makes it better for the skin.
 
It depends how thick your beard is... if it's rather thick and stubbly then I'd recommend against going electric, however if you only have a slight beard anything by Braun's or philips is pretty good.

I dont think ive got that tough facial hair tbh, with a fresh blade it comes off nicely, however after a few days I feel like im shaving with a bit of broken glass that the ****** leave on the floor after a good ol' bottlin sesh.

see above, im getting crap results with wet shaving, plus dry shaving looks like I could do it in about 30 seconds oppossed to the time it takes me with a wetshave so I dont slice my face apart : /

Cliff gets quite a beard but the phillips one he has works well, he prefers a razor really but can't always be bothered :p

I'm the same but you can almost see the beard grow on me :p An electric never feels quite good enough, but it's good enough for a quick spruce up.

DO yourself a massive favour and get over to http://badgerandblade.com/ and learn about proper shaving methods and equipment.

Despite what the modern marketing tells you, some of the best shaves to be had can be got with 'old fashioned' double edge (DE) razors, badger hair brushes, and proper shaving soap. The kind of kit your granddad probably used.

A razor like a Merkur HD http://www.gentlemans-shop.com/acatalog/merkur-34-razor.html#a45 is a superb choice, and you can buy the blades for them pretty much anywhere for peanuts compared to modern cartridges.

It might seem counter intuitive but shaving hasn't advanced at all in the last hundred years, the only thing advancing is the profit margins of the major corporations. :(

It might be a step too far for you, but cut throat razors are even better, and are what I've used for the last 18 months. For example this morning I shaved with a cut throat razor which was forged in 1884 (shown below) and sharpened by me - best shave going. :)

I was being serious, someone pointed me in the direction of that forum a couple of years ago and I'm really glad they did. :)

Edit: Btw I'm not a wizened old giffer either. ;)

I was in this position last year for crimbo. Got a philips coolshave thinger with the lotion packs. Used it a few times, hated it. No where near as nice a cut as wet shaving and left me a bit itchy.

Personally i recommend against them, might be preferable getting a good cutthroat blade?
 
Gareth, ever tried a cut-throat? Best shave I've ever got until it was nicked by airport security :( Still need to get myself a new one. Not the disposable blade type, the single blade type that you have to sharpen on a leather belt.

I must admit i've never tried it...

I'd imagine they are quite expensive though? How much am I looking for a reasonable one? what shaving soap etc do you recommend etc etc?

You use them? What's your favourite?

I had loads at one time but ended up selling most of them, now I just have a 5/8 DD Satinedge and a 5/8 Thiers Issard handforged limited edition.

Edit: If anyone's interested in trying a cut throat then http://www.straightrazorplace.com/forums/ is a great forum with loads of useful info, the forum owner (Lynn Abrams) did a superb DVD a while back which covers everything you need to know and is perfect to learn from.

Btw I have no affiliation with Lynn or his site, I'm just a long time member there along with quite a few other UK guys.

I had a Dovo Solingen 5/8 straight carbon steel blade. Over £100's worth of razor, kidnapped :(

Gareth as for shaving soaps, I can't remember what I used, I used to buy it from my barber (it was unlabelled, however there are lots of products out there) who also used to offer shaves to me. It is more expensive initially, but it's cheaper than buying £10 per pack of Mach3 razor blades constantly.

It takes a bit of time to get used to it, and I nicked my face a couple of times, but once you have got the hand of it, it is just wonderful!

Eek, not good. Was it in checked baggage or did you try to carry it on in hand luggage? I've taken straights with me on planes before and never had a problem (touch wood), always in my wash kit in checked luggage though.

Same. I got a nice expensive one last year for Christmas. Can't remember the last time I used it. It's no-where near as good as a wet shave and actually doesn't save you that much time.

I still use my mach3 whatever, expensive but I normally let it grow for a couple of days before shaving. Hobo look :D
