Right-O,

We need some rewiring done on our house due to the last tennant being a useless fat DIYer who managed to wire most of the rooms with 1.5mm lighting cable instead of the recommended size cable  Luckily the office is ok :D

Now ive been waiting on a quote from our local recommended sparkie but he is swamped and hasnt yet got the quote through to us (been 3 weeks now) and im getting a little peeved as the house has come to a stand still until this is done.

My mums husband re-wired his mums house 4 years ago and they got someone to come out and provide a certificate for the work. He has offered to come and do the work for free but isnt sure on getting it certified.

Does anyone know if its possible to do? And if so, where should i be looking fr more info or the cert?

thanks in advance

There was a thread about this sometime ago, as I recall you could pay the local council £150 and they would come and inspect the work and sign it off.

Don't quote me on that though!

You need to find a sparky is prepaired to inspect and test and put his name to the inspect & test part of the 3 part EIC (electrical installation certificate) while you put your name for design and construction

You also need to speak to your local building control and check that they would accept such an EIC (the better ones will come and check your work and the EIC to sign the work off.... the rubbish ones won't sign anything off on direct notification to them anyway and insist you use a registered installer :( )

The other alternative way of providing a certificate to building control, is to do the job and have a sparky provide a PIR (periodic inspection report) on the installation afterwards, as before check BC are happy before you set off down this path.

Another alternative is a registered installer could stretch the rules and sign it off directly himself without any need to involve BC but thats a tad naughty(bescause he is signing to say HE did all the work, and if there is anything dodgy that comes to light later... guess who gets the blame...), , generally I'd expect more reputable firms to refuse to do this

Or you could just do it anyway and not bother notifiying BC , but thats even naughtier....
