I moved in with the GF in November and whilst we expected a higher electricty bill we didnt expect it to go from £50ish a quarter to £210ish a quarter.

Changes from before to after (heating and hot water are ran on gas btw and cooker is electric)
We now both spend every night here as a pose to her staying at mine 3/4 times a week
26" LCD > 46" plasma
+ 110l tropical fish tank with 2 pumps and 100w heater
+ 15" dual core laptop (0 - 4 hours a day)
+ Q6600 OC based desktop running 2 x 24" LED monitors (2 hours a day, rest of time on standby rather than turned off)
+ tumble dryer
+ Athlon XP based NAS
+ meals cooked daily rather than 2/3 times a week.

Can't think of any other changes made, but would all this quadruple the bill ?

Meter readings were taken for both btw.

Thanks
James

Is that because she has been underpaying on estimates and has a balance to pay back factored in?

Or is it the bill for what has been used in the last quarter?

Tumble dryer and fish tank will probably be most power consuming (assuming the heater is on to maintain temp)

I don't think power wise you have as much stuff running as we do in a 4 person 3 bed bungalow and we don't pay anything like that a quarter!

Get her to fry the fish after which you kick her out.

Job done - cheaper bills :D

ps The plasma will suck juice too so don't just leave it running unnecessarily. Do you power down your set top boxes every day ?

Get on Economy 7 and run the washing machine, dishwasher and tumble dryer overnight. They all guzzle electricity.

I bet that old XP NAS isn't massively efficient as well.

£50 a quarter running all that? Insanely cheap, £250 a quarter sounds more like it, I think the £50 must've been a massively under-read estimate.

That doesn't sound right, we are totally electric, including central heating:

42" plasma
2500k pc with 4 HDDs
Atom HTPC
i3 Laptop
Hob/oven used every day
Heating on 5pm-10pm during winter
Boiler heating water from 3am-7am every day

£100/month

This will completely depend what tariff you are on, comparing like for like is pointless.

That a very power hungry CPU ..You be much better switching the machine off when not being used....

Why leave it in standby for about 22hours a day ??

Was gonna say. £50 a quarter? Sounds too cheap. £200 sounds about right for 3 months and the stuff you have.

Fish tank and tumble drier probably taking the most juice i would have thought?

Maybe the plasma as well if you have it on all the time.
