We had a fire in our open plan kitchen.
All electronic devices like TV, remotes, sky box , PC, PC screen, hi-fi etc what can be found in the living room and appliances in kitchen are now covered in smoke dust....

Anyone knows what's the best way to clean them ? Are they safe to use ? I can imagine that smoke and dust got to some of them via holes in their housings....

If it is safe, what's the best way to get rid of the smell from them ? We need to get whole smell removed as cat might be scared of it - he got hurt in whole fire ...

Thanks

What happened to the cat? :(

Cant your house insurance give you guidance on these things?

I don't think you'll entirely get rid of the smell smoke until they have been turned on for a while.

If it were me, I'd get to where I can, brush off any dust and soot, use compressed air, then brush a very small amount of pure alcohol everywhere inside - it'll probably evaporate in a few minutes, but allow a few hours to be safe.

So we went to Dominican republic... for 90mins.
Our flat cought on fire. The minute we landed we got a text saying our cat is treated for smoke inhalation. We came back on the same plane to find baby russian dead, big one jumped from 2nd floor window and has 4 broken ribs when fire brigade opened windows..., living room and kitchen destroyed. ...

Building insurance will cover damage done to the building as they say but as they are bringing loss adjuster week after the fire, whole lot in living room and kitchen now has soot and smell embedded so we think most of it will need to be replaced. Based on that time frame, we will try to make th cover whole costs as we can not get in and start any work.
All damage is a repercussion of a built in microwave exploding on its own...

We will make them cover costs of a kitten and vet bill of the big one -£1400. If not, we are ready to take them to court.
Their appliance destroyed our kitten, badly injured other one.

Me and the wife crying all the time only by the thought of the little one...Yes am crying now again :(

Didn't wanted to bring the whole story here :(

Your house will stink of smoke for ages and so will the devices, remote or anything portable just wipe clean best you can and dunk in overnight or for a good day in a load of sodium bicarbonate.

As for other smells in the house you will have to redecorate and wash curtains. If you got carpet hire a rug doctor for a few days.

We had a house fire when I was young and it stunk for ages. :(

Bright side at least no one was hurt. ;)

We are getting whole flat redecorated....

Sorry to hear that, absolutely sucks.

One of my friends pushed for everything affected to be wholly replaced and their insurers didn't quibble with it. Might be worth a go.

Thanks .
We bought the place in July....We have quotes for content insurance but never got to finish it...
Will be pushing building insurance for it.

You didn't have contents insurance? That could make things a bit awkward I would have thought...

We know.
If they wont replace we will.
We will make them to pay for pets though....
Anything else doesn't matter now.

Trying to find out if it will be safe to turn appliances on

Wait.. what. You're expecting the buildings insurance to pay for the pets - and you're angry at the fire brigade for their fate

Did I say I'm angry at fire brigade? No.

And yes, I expect building insurance to pay for damage to them.
It's hardwired appliance that has exploded and cause the damage and death.
Appliance that was not used set in fire.
Was only used as a clock in the kitchen...

Contests insurance would not cover pets anyway.

Replace pets on house and contents insurance Wut? Good luck with that one mate pmsl. :D

As for appliances turn them on and see, they will either work or wont.

If they short and go bang then claim on the insurance, if they work then carry on as usual.

Pmsl ?
You clearly have no pets and compassion.
Pey insurance or contents would not cover death.
Please leave this thread if you have nothing important to say.

I'm asking for assistance with knowledge on electronics affected by fire.

Rest is up to us.
Thanks

Sorry - my mistake, I read

Their appliance destroyed our kitten, badly injured other one.

with appliance to mean the fire engine / appliance. I got the context wrong.

I'd be surprised if the building insurance covered the cost of vet bill, but it's worth a try I suppose. The way I see it, is the microwave isn't actually part of a building, it's part of your contents, built-in or not.

But that's really rotten luck and I sympathise with you losing a pet at this time of year. :(

It's decided they will replace kitchen, doors - broken by fire brigade and the lot - corridor in the flat which was damaged by falling door.... Rest is up to loss adjuster...We will try our luck
