Can someone give me the low down on electronic muscle stimulation sets? I go to the gym about 3 times a week as i dont get much free time. So is it worth me investing in one of these electronic muscle stimulation devices that you can find in your argos catalogue?

Will it help me get my six pack? Any heath issues?

I will be the second to say don't waste your cash on them. If you want a six pack you need to drop your bodyfat quite low through lots of exercise, a controlled diet and mustard.

Yes, that's right, mustard. Mustard rubbed on the abdomen speeds up fat burning in this area through heat transfer. The only side effect is hair growth.

Lol, I knew this would be the general answer! But i was after more of an explanation rather than just a no'p! Please? :p

To get a six pack you need to have low body fat. You can have the strongest and biggest abs in the world but if you are a porker nobody will see them.

The eleccy pack doesn't do the cardio part so you wont lose bodyfat. Hence, no six pack. It also doesn't offer enough of a workout to develop ripped abs.

Everyone has abs. Your problem is losing the layer of fat over them.

You can't spot-burn fat and as said the leccy packs don't do anything towards burning fat.

They're fairly useless.

The quickest way to get a 6pack is to have a calorie deficit from your diet and to follow a fat burning exercise regime.

These belts and devices will help to build up the strength in your muscles if used often enough.

However if its your abs we are talking about, then this is useless unless you are doing a lot of cardio work at the same time.

As gilly and Youstolemyname rightly say, you could have the worlds largest abs but you wont see them until your body fat is down to 10%. So the best way to get a six is to do some decent cardio and cut that fat.

So yes, they will strengthen your muscles to an extent, but they wont give you a visable six pack.

you can see abs quite a bit above 10%bf, im sure something like 15/16% and you will start to see them.

I've never heard of an ab press.

Is it like a crunch?

Sounds like they're not very effective if you do 200 a day with 7% bf!

Building abs and for that matter any muscle, should be done by performing tough, slow reps. Easy excercises that you can do 200 of really wont be doing as much as 20 hard ones.

Strange about the BF thing though.

I like doing spinning classes, they last about 50 mins and your supposed to be able to burn about 600-800 cal in that time. So if i do for example 4 of these a week, eat healthy and maybe throw in some tonning work like a body pump class (its basically arobics with weights), will that get me a 6 park?

If i stuck to it and worked hard is it possible to get a 6 pack, or close, in 4 weeks? Or is that OTT?

I am 19 years old, weigh 12.5 stone and am average height. I do have a bit of a gut but no huge beer belly.

Totally depends on your body fat percentage. You may find your gut isn't due to that much fat, but is simply due to a untoned/relaxed (Can't remember the name of it, but the ring of muscle that holds the internal organs under the ribs in). If this is so, you may find that you only need to further develop the abs/lose a little fat, which can be done relatively quickly. Otherwise I'd say at least 2-3 weeks before seeing any sort of definition. Again, this depends entirely on how much of a "Gut" you actually have.

strange that i have 7% body fat do 200 ab presses a day and still dont have a six pack :(

start doing exercises that put you into a low rep range, get the muscle burning out earlier than 200! cable crunches are a good place to start adding weight, also add in some exercises for obliques and your lower abs (hanging leg raises etc)

as said, it depends on how much bf you have now, how tight you are on your diet (this needs ot be nailed) and how much exercise you will do.
you say spinning classes burn 600-800 calories, well 30 mins on tread mill at a good pace and a nice incline (4%-6% for example) you will burn 750+ calories, do 20 mins on xtrainer and your looking at another 300+ (depending on how strenuous the work is).
instead of doing pump it might be worth doing some proper weights, some squats (excellent all over exercise, will work your abs as well as legs), deadlifts (same as squats for lower body), bench press, shoulder press and maybe a few other exercises. will add muscle mass (which burns calories in itself) and make you look better all over :]
