Electronic sensors

Hi all, I've been thinking about having a tinker at electronics lately, what I'm wanting to do is put a sensor on my back door ( no jokes please ) which would illumintate a small led in another part of the house when the door is open, I'd like to power this from the mains so obviously I'll need a transformer to bring the voltage right down, has anyone done somthing like this before ? Just after a bit of info/advice.

Wouldn't it be easier having a simple connection being made when the door is closed, rather than faffing about with "sensors"?

yea like a lot of pub doors used to have a metal contact strip so whenever some chav opened the door an alarm would sound

Also would be hell of a lot easier to power from a low volt battery, and probably 100x cheaper in the long run.
