Electronics - Ceramic Earphone

Hi,

I recently purchased an electronics kit. I figured it would be a bit of fun to have a play with leading up to (Hopefully! Grades permitting) an Electronic Engineering course at University beginning next academic year.... Who knows - Might even help me out...

Anyways I was going through one of the projects in the kit and after completing it, following the instructions exactly, it did not work. I got a multimeter on it and the only place I could find in the circuit which does not pass the continuity test was the Ceramic Earphone (I take it this is meant to pass the continuity test, right?)...

So I presume that the reason for it not working is a dud component - The Ceramic Earphone.

I'd really like to get another one of these - To replace the one that the kit originally came with - I'm sure I'll need it for a fair few projects in the kit just yet!

If anybody knows any place I would be able to buy one of these (Only need one...) or perhaps if anybody could sort me out with one it'd be great - Any help appreiciated.

Here are some photos of the component (Incase these may be known by another name, for example - I really don't know *that* much electronics just yet)...

Many thanks in advanced.

Dan.

That type of ear piece is very high impedance. How did you try to test it? Set your multimeter to the highest resistance range and try again. If however it is faulty You should be able to get a replacement from one of the well known electronic component suppliers.

EDIT: they are often called crystal ear pieces.
