2 diodes in series would give 1.4v drop which is perfect.

I often add diodes to case fans to slow 'em down a touch. :)

Yes I know how a zener diode behaves. The link you have provided clearly shows a series resistor to act as a dropper, yet above you state this is not required. I think you are the one who should be reading this ;)
