I know you can get software to measure the FOV but someone on the ED forums suggested a practical test.
Obviously FOV is partly linked to your face shape and IPD but just for fun.........
This may actually be useful for anyone wondering if it is worth modding their G2. IF they can already get the FOV I get with the mod with the normal faceplate chances are the mod will have little advantage and may spoil the image.

In ED sit in an asp explorer Reset your view and making sure you are lined up with your character and looking straight ahead.....

The vertical struts on the left and right side of the canopy both have white lights on.

Quest 2. -. Can see a sliver of the lights but not all of them.
G2 with standard head gasket. Can't see the lights at all (for my head the standard gasket really is poor)
G2 with gasket removed and using odyssey VR cover... Can see the lights in full but that is pretty much the limit of the FOV. If I tighte the headset any more I see the screen limits.

I would be interested to hear other headsets esp the index (which I expect to be better yet)... But how much better is what really interests me.

Index FOV for Elite (when the lenses are dialed right in) is incredible. The vertical FOV in particular is so large that you can't really see the upper edge. The edge-to-edge clarity is also excellent - the outer edges are pretty clear which means you don't have to move your head as much to read displays or follow targets.
This adds up to a huge advantage in dogfights as you can much more easily follow other spacecraft without having to constantly move your head.

The main disadvantage to the FOV is with the lenses dialed in you can see the edge of the lenses in your peripheral vision (a bit like seeing the edge of the screen on the Quest 2 with the widest IPD setting), but it's not really noticable while playing. Also the Index lens glare is very bad, but again not that noticable while playing and you do get used to it.
 
I know it's bigger but I was wondering how much bigger hence why the ASP Ex is a good yardstick as those lights are pretty much the absolute limit for the standard FOV headsets.

I have played ED on the DK2, CV1 and quest 2. With the G2 mod the FOV is slightly larger than those headsets but the clarity is the G2 standout feature. It is getting close to monitor clarity and that is fantastic.
 
It's hugely bigger than Quest 2 (I've got both). When I get a chance I'll fire up elite again and get back to my asp and check exactly how much bigger.

It might be for you, but not for BigMike20vt. While in actual measurements they both have roughly the same FOV. The actual FOV on each headset will vary from person to person.

I don't think Index vertical FOV can't be matched by the Quest 2, no matter what your head or face shape is. Have you ever tried one? I've had a Rift CV1, Go, Quest, and Quest 2 as well as an Index and none of those come close to the Index FOV when the Index lenses are dialed right in. As I said the main difference is vertical and not horizontal. Horizontal FOV may well be similar in some circumstances.

Think there is a misunderstanding. I was going by Mike's comparison between the Reverb G2 and the Quest 2. Didn't realise you were talking about the Index.
