Hi there.

Although i have known about him for a while and some of the ambitions he has i have never really read up much on him.

He has some amazing ambitions, Solar City, Space X, Tesla etc, i have just been reading about one thing he also has planned for Tesla, i think it is fantastic and i hope it happens one day.

"When true self-driving is approved by regulators, it will mean that you will be able to summon your Tesla from pretty much anywhere. Once it picks you up, you will be able to sleep, read or do anything else enroute to your destination.

You will also be able to add your car to the Tesla shared fleet just by tapping a button on the Tesla phone app and have it generate income for you while you’re at work or on vacation, significantly offsetting and at times potentially exceeding the monthly loan or lease cost. This dramatically lowers the true cost of ownership to the point where almost anyone could own a Tesla. Since most cars are only in use by their owner for 5% to 10% of the day, the fundamental economic utility of a true self-driving car is likely to be several times that of a car which is not.

In cities where demand exceeds the supply of customer-owned cars, Tesla will operate its own fleet, ensuring you can always hail a ride from us no matter where you are.

He has some amazing ideas that i hope he pulls off and hopefully dreams up more and more.

He reminds me of your typical well known movie character like Tony Stark after he stopped selling weapons :)

I wonder if Elon has got any very secret projects tucked away :p

Sounds interesting would read again.

Serious note, it is good as long as the typical system is not followed

I'd love to be able to just get in a car and have it take me where I need to go whilst I do whatever else I want. I know you could argue that is what a bus or taxi does but it's the personal convenience angle that is great. I'd probably go to Cornwall every weekend if the car could safely drive me there whilst I watched GoT and/or slept. Fingers crossed this tech comes to pass soon.

My fave anecdote I recently came across about him is he bought Wet Nellie at auction (for £550k), the Lotus Esprit shaped submarine from The Spy Who Loved Me, with intentions to use his Tesla expertise to turn it into a working electric aquatic car. :p

A shame that one of his falcon 9's exploded on the launch pad the other day. ( i love that his brother whom also paid into space x with him from his share of the paypal cut, he said that even if he just blew up a massive rocket, it would be a worthwhile investment :D )

It's a shame children have people like singers and actors as roll models. I think Elon would make a great roll model for a lot of children.

I met the guy, hes incredibly smart and seems to be exceptionally talented at multitasking. Kind of weird when you talk to him you don't think he is paying any attention because his mind is working on so many other issues at once and just when you think you are incredibly frustrated that he isn't paying any attention he will make a quick assertion of profound insight.

Can you divulge? Sounds hella interesting!

so long as that tesla fleet thing is open to competition that is a good thing, there do need to be other third party fleet operators you can add your car too else it will be too easy for them to fleece you and give you a ****** % of the revenue

will be amusing to see what french taxi drivers think of it, they went ape **** over uber, only another decade or two before most of them are not really needed at all

also being able to partly fund your car by letting it be used as an automated taxi when you're not using it is going to have an even bigger effect on the aspirational types who already over extend themselves on credit... now they can borrow even more beyond their means and have it subsidised by their taxi passengers

There is probably a neat trick for creditors here too - lower the risk of defaults by having a clause whereby the car returns itself to the creditor if the owner misses a payment, no need for bailiffs. :D

I think people get a bit overwhelmed when they meet these sorts. Sounds like that scene in the TV show Silicon Valley where Richard is waiting for a meeting with the CEO and the various company vice presidents are asking if he's met him before and telling him how amazing the experience is.... :D

I do like the guy and think what he's trying to achieve is amazing but I don't share his vision of shared self driving cars going mainstream.

Self driving cars yes (although car sickness is still an issue for being able to do much work) but people like owning their own car filled with all their junk. Parents for example with all the child kit / seats or tradesmen and all the tools / gear.

Plus what if you want to leave something in the car when you get to your destination although I suppose booking for a longer duration could solve that.

As a replacement for taxis then yes awesome but as a replacement for car ownership I'm not so sure.
