Ok so Im curious about how everyone syncs these elements with the various devices you may have.

For example, I have a PC and I have an iPhone and am considering getting a laptop.

Now I use my iPhone email functionality primarily for my work email (not personal email).

But now I wish to be able to check my personal email on all devices, including my laptop which, as I said, will purchase later.

Additionally, I would like to sync up all the other elements mentioned above. But heres the thing.

On my desktop, I have a folder structure. So if I wanted to check my email on my laptop, what is the best way to ensure that whatever I do there gets replicated on my home PC? (Forget about the iPhone for now).

I realise there are a few options etc like MobileMe and Google something or the other, but the key issue is the folder structure.

I'd appreciate any thoughts you have on this folks. Many thanks.

You haven't said how you access your work or personal email or what protocols.

For work I use Outlook on all my computers which connects to an Exchange server. Exchange preserves my email folder structure, so it is always there regardless of which computer or device I am using.

For personal I use GMail primarily. I connect to that on my iPhone using IMAP, which again uses the folder structure I set up using the web interface for GMail.

For your e-mail, use IMAP to connect to the servers. What ever you do on outlook/web front end on one device will always be replicated to the other devices. This is because everything is stored and organized on the email servers as opposed to you downloading and organizing it like POP3.

In regards to calendar and contacts sync this will depend on your works environment. If you have Microsoft Exchange at work then these functions should be readily available but you may need to confirm with the IT dept.

For your personal e-mail, if its provided by GMail then your in luck, all the functionality your asking about is provided as standard, all you need to do is configure the relevant devices and your good to go.

Tbh, work email isnt an issue as that doesnt need to be replicated. Its the personal email which is currently accessed via POP3.

So how does IMAP work exactly? Would it be able to replicate my Outlook 2010 mail folder structure?

I use my ISP mail (Virgin Media), and University mail (Warwick).
I have heard of exchange but I'm not familiar with how it works.
