I've been using some emails from dead blueyonder accounts for a few years now, and I'm starting to think it would be a good idea to move away from them because I have no idea if/when they will be deactivated.

Thats why I'm interested in buying a domain and getting some simple pop3 email accounts on it. I understand that a domain might cost about £3 / year, but after that, I'm not sure what I need, and then who are some good companies for those services.

I did a quick search, but I probably used the wrong terms. I saw vidahost come up a couple of times - they do what I need?

Thanks for any advice.

i'll move this to IC&C.

IIRC some companies will provide a little bit of space with the domain registration, others will require you to buy a hosting package as well (and some will throw in the domain registration with a hosting package...).

I currently use 34sp.com, not the cheapest but they have proven to be reliable for me although they no longer do very cheap hosting (they've stopped offering "personal" hosting which was about £12-18 a year for the lowest level, and now start at "pro" which has a fairly large amount of space/bandwidth + 100 email address, smtp server and virus/spam filtering).

.uk domains are registered in 2 year blocks and can be had for ~£5 per registration/renewal. Vidahost are a nice company to deal with.

Next step is the actual email hosting, something registrars and hosting companies will charge you for. I have Google Apps handle my email as it's free and gives me the Gmail interface for webmail, along with POP3/IMAP access for my email client. Lots of guides out there like this one that explain how to setup the Google Apps part.

you need to upload something for the google apps registration process - doesnt that mean you need a host anyway?

anyway, i have a domain, but no space attached to it. I dont think i can change cname either atm so not sure how to proceed for google apps registration

Who did you register the domain through? Any half-decent registrar should give you full DNS control or be able to make the changes for you.

They'll certainly make the changes if you submit a ticket. But you should be able to do it yourself. Last section here indicates you can configure CNAME and MX records, though I've never used it myself as I have a shared hosting account and have a different control panel to use.

Again they'll happily make the changes for you if you submit a ticket, just get all the details together and they'll do it in one go. You'll have a unique string to be set as a CNAME pointing at google.com and a list of MX records to add. Also it's probably worth adding another CNAME, for example gmail as the CNAME pointing to ghs.google.com, then you can configure a custom URL with Google Apps and use gmail.your-domain.com to get at your webmail.

cool. i cant see how to get to that configuration page from the options available to me - no control panel access...

ah, just found this:
If you require custom DNS records, please open a support ticket - we fully support custom A, CNAME, MX records and more.

Would probably help if I read my own link :(
Please note: We do not yet have an automated interface for .UK domains, however please open a ticket to have your zone configured.
Again get all the info together on a ticket and Dom or Seb will sort it quickly.
