i've had a bit of an email problem for a while. Whenever my boss sends me an email attachment is comes through as a winmail.dat file which i can't open - doesn't seem to happen when anybody else sends me one.
Also it only happens if he sends to my work address and not my yahoo one.

i'm using thunderbird and he uses outlook and i'm not sure if the problem is at his end or mine.

any ideas???

cheers

I've had this problem in the past and if I remember correctly, it's something to do with HTML / Plain text formatting for the email.

Sorry I can't be a bit clearer, but it's worth having a prod around.

This Microsoft article details the cause and solution.

UnworthyBean was on the right lines, it's to do with Rich Text Format. Looks like you'll probably have to get your boss to resend the mail in a different format, check the link out for details.

Having said that, I use Thunderbird and in the View menu there is "Message Body As" with 3 sub options, you could give those a go to see if it helps without having to pester your boss. I've no idea if this will work though as I don't have a mail with the problem you're having to test with, but it's worth a punt.

thanks but i'm not sure that is it.

I can see the message and anything he writes in the message but it is the attachment (no matter what he sends, doc, pdf, jpg etc) that always comes as a winmail.dat

I have just tried to access the emails using the companies webmail system (browser based and pretty slow) and the attachment is ok there - so its something to do with thunderbird???
